Our Director of Operations showed me an advertisement from Cinema Equipment & Supplies Inc. that pictures a SplyceMar film splicer. Unless my eyes deceive me, it looks very much like the Neumade.

I was wondering if anyone encountered these at Show West and what is their take on them? I checked the reviews and manuals sections(no luck) and also did a search on this product that produced no results. Does anyone have any information?

The one I saw appeared to be the spitting image of a Neumade 35SS. I am being sent one for review. I will put it up against a brand new Neumade and see if I can find any differences. Supposedly, even the parts are interchangeable.

Since Neumade's traditional 35SS splicer is made by SOMAR of Japan, I am guessing that the exclusivness that Neumade enjoyed with SOMAR is gone.

Even if the same company makes the product for both companies, it's possible that there may be different quality standards for Neumade and SplyceMar.

Sony does this with their Trinitron CRTs--many companies sell TV sets and monitors with Trinitron tubes, but the ones sold by Sony use higher-grade tubes than the ones sold by other manufacturers.

On othe other hand, it's entirely possible that the Neumade and SplyceMar splicers are identical except for the label.

I'm not saying that's incorrect, but I'm curious if there's some kind of data to back that up. The non-Sony monitors I've seen with Trinitron tubes have all looked pretty darned good. Of course this is totally a subjective observation.

I received a spycemar 35tk from NCS and have had nothing go wrong with it so far. It's as reliable as the neumade 35ss.

I am currently evaluating one of these as well on two film festivals. The staff is afraid to touch it it looks sooooo new and pretty compared to the well-used NeuTaper they have at the theatre... [Big Grin]

I've only had to buy two due to some idiots 'realigning' the blade with a pair of vice-grips and totally mucking up the blade. Other than that, I just sharpen with a stone.
