My theatre currently has the 3000's in every auditorium but two. We've only been open for about 6 months now and already we are having to run two auditoriums in emergency backup because we have cards going out inside the processor. After six months? And they're all on back order. Obviously if they're on back order a lot of other venues are experiencing the same problems. The two other houses that run the 650's have had no problems at all.

Your booth is probably too hot or the rack not well ventilated.
Which component is failing?

Do you mean you run the processor in backup/bypass or that you have alternate processors as temporary replacement?

I guess I wanted to know if this is a commonality among new digial processors of all brands, or if this is just Sony's quality. Also it's the DSP-82 that's failing.

The only digital processor I've dealt with is the CP500 and I've never seen a card failure. The only problems I've seen have been with buggy software.

I have a love-hate relationship with the CP500 for various software-related reasons, but the hardware seems basically solid, just like all Dolby processors.

You need to call Sony Technical Support and complain to them. We get very good service form Sony most of the time. On occasion they can be hard to get ahold of though but try back or leave your name/number and they WILL call you back. I ahve 2 stubborn DFP-2000 processors that are going back to Sony for service this week. One has already had cards subbed fomr another unit and it still is having an intermittent Left Chan. fader problem. There is only one 2000 at the other location so I can't sub the boards. Sony would prefer to get them back for repair....and while I'm usually against that its cheaper than having them send out a whole set of boards......and it will save time. The penthouse reader is not the problem in either location......nor is the "B" chain at fault.

As per the CP-500...I've had most of the boards fail at least once...had alot of them to service though and sold alot of them too. Usually the video aquisition card failed in my cases but have had one main computer board also fail in the last 6 months.

I still like the 500 and find usually that its far better sounding then the 650 is. I think the 500 has just the right combination of analog and digital working together.

Hey Daniel, remember me...I did the install there....you have some flakey cards, we had a couple of bad cards on screen #6 & 12 before open & had to get them replace...no Sony just has some problems right now !! Only thing to do is to replace them, anything has been adjusted to SMPTE & AMC specs...
