One of my projectionists called me and said that Dreamcatcher has reels 1A and 1B. He only noticed becasue after reel one was unwound he saw credits and a blue screen. I told him to rewind to some image and see if anyone in the film was in that reel, if not then it's probably a short of some kind.
Just looked at the Dreamcatcher page, and it is an AniMatrix movie called the Final Flight of the Osiris. I probably should have looked there first.

I think it's a short that has something to do with The Matrix.

They have been advertising "Last Flight of the Osiris" - a short animated prequel to the next Matrix movie as playing with Dreamcatcher. I have not seen a print of that movie, nor do I know whether this is in all markets, or just some.

Did an explanation come in the cans with the print at all? Seems like that would be a good idea, judging from the "quality" of work and attention span of a lot of todays "popcorn projectionists" boast...

For a given "double" (2000') reel, there will always be an "A" and a "B" part. Films are assembled by the negative cutter into 1000' lengths, so reel "1" is actually reel "1AB" and is composed of lab roll 1A and lab roll 1B. Old IB Technicolor prints have a lab splice between the "A" and "B" sections.
This is not to be confused with "A & B roll printing" aka "checkerboard printing," which is a different thing altogether and involves two negative rolls which alternate between picture and black leader at every cut. This allows certain optical effects (like fades, dissolves, superimposition, etc.) to be done as part of the contact printing process (instead of in an optical printer) and is necessary to produce invisible negative splices in 16mm.

This is the case. Reel 1a is the 10 minute short and 1b is the first reel of the film. From what I understand all markets will be getting the short.

You can download it at theanimatrix.com its very good fantastic animation.

I am SO GLAD you guys posted this here because I saw it right before a projectionist called me at home (at 10pm) to ask what the deal was.
Naturally, I pretended that I "just know these things." I'll tell her the truth next week.
Maybe.
Anyways, thanks.

There is a note with my print.
Please be advised:
"Dreamcatcher" with the "Final Flight" reel is a total of 8 reels.
Reel 1A is the short "Final Flight" and 1B is the start of the feature " Dreamcatcher"
At the beginning of reel 1B is the trailer attachment of "Malibu's Most Wanted"
Thank You,
Warner Bros. Dist. Corp

Hello all. So essentially, the short has its own head and tail with blue screen? I remember MIIB had the Chubb Chubbs, but I wasn't working in booth when we had it. Is it similar to that title? Thanks!

Chubb Chubbs came to us in a plastic baggie on a core. No reels.

Wait a minute...

How stupid is that??? I always thought that having trailers attached to a print is a dumb idea anyway, but this seams absolutely retarded!
Posted by Nicholas Roznovsky (Member # 861) on 03-20-2003, 09:54 AM:
Putting the attached trailer between the short and the feature makes it much less likely that most projectionists will take the time and trouble to remove it from the print. Distributors don't care so much about presentation, it's all about marketing agreements for them.
Posted by Richard Miller (Member # 1405) on 03-20-2003, 01:33 PM:
Our company has sent out an e-mail telling all theaters showing Dreamcatcher to remove the attached trailer. Apparently they thought it was shorter than it actually was due to the 10 min short. Now what are people going to do without being able to see their Malibu's Most Wanted trailer
Posted by Mark J. Marshall (Member # 1409) on 03-20-2003, 01:36 PM:
No it won't. If it's the theater's policy to do that, then it's not making it less likely that they'll follow the policy, it just makes extra work for them.

Well contrary to what the letter says, for our 3 prints of Dreamcatcher:
- Reel 1A had the attached trailer (“Malibu’s Most Wanted”), then the Matrix Short (“Animatrix: The Final Flight of the Osiris”).
- Reel 1B was the start of the feature.
Posted by Aaron Garman (Member # 1653) on 03-21-2003, 03:28 AM:
Hello all. As Michael said, our print had Malibu on 1A with the Matrix and the feature starting on 1B. One word of note, we had some major DTS dropouts throughout the film. It kept dropping out on reels 1, 3, 4,5, and 6. I checked the discs and they were perfect. Must be timecode. Hopefully it works better when we run it in SRD. Cheers!

We just finished watching Dreamcather and I myself had the DTS fall in and out, but it was only on the first reel, or 1B I suppose... We also had a problem with the exposure, it went dark for a few minutes then it was off color at least through half of reel 1B

I'll bet ya dollars to cents that there's a lab splice at one end of the discolouration and that the discolouration is a blue fog.
Get yourself a replacement reel. Not only will it look better for your customers, but the next person that runs it in analog will thank you since the soundtrack invariably gets fogged which causes a very low audio level (with zip for dynamic range).

Ours also had the trailer on reel 1A. Guess someone at WB agrees with me, and someone else doesn't!
Our reel 1A had multiple light base scratches running down the entire reel. And it was coded with the new "cap like" code about six times. Nice smooth animation, then BANG! Big orange dots on the screen! How irritating.

The new Warner Brothers master licensing agreement that I just signed(and which I understand is being required of all theatres) explicitly says that all attached material (including trailers, featurettes and other material) must be exhibited in full at each screening of the licensed picture (unless Warners gives permission otherwise).
I wonder if this means that Warners will step up inspection and enforcement for those who chronically remove such material and/or fail to send it back with the print.

That is NOT the CAP code Kodak developed for the MPAA, which has been in continuous use since 1982.
Posted by Mark J. Marshall (Member # 1409) on 03-23-2003, 05:46 PM:
Actually, you're probably right. I just wish we knew what to call it. Not to put down your CAP code, John. Sorry about that. But these dots are not the HUGE dots I've seen recently on some films, the dots are much smaller, and are actually on screen for three frames, not one. We did order the replacement reel, and it also has the code. Does anyone know what this new code is called?

We had to take off the short on our print for reasons unknown direct order from the main office.....

Could someone be kind enough to send me a set of your "bad" discs for evaluation if I send you a replacement set? I've emailed a few people here so far and no one has been able to help.
Thanks,
Karen at DTS

Aldo, I wonder what Warner Bros. would have to say about that.
