These are the ABS plastic 3D glasses made for Disney (and other theme parks). They were made by Custom Plastics Developments in Orlando. This is one of the samples they sent me.

And these are the disposable 3D glasses we had for "Jaws 3D" back in 1983.

Here's a pair of Nuoptix 3D glasses...

Nuoptix was developed to transform 2D images to 3D and the system was used for the Superbowl halftime show in 1989 (I think). The 3D halftime show was sponsored by Coca-Cola and that's why the frames are red-and-white.

How they worked: Evidently, by placing a darker filter over one eye causes a slight delay to the brain (!) which means that if the image is a lateral dolly shot (or steadicam shot) moving at 5mph then the eyes will transmit images with a simulted parallax. When viewed through the Nuoptix glasses, a pendulum swinging left-right-left would seem to be swinging in a circle.

The light/dark 3D illusion is known as the Pulfrich effect (do a web search) and works quite well with a pair of sunglasses from which one lens was removed.

The ABS glasses resemble the ones that were issued by Consolidated's long defunct Liberty theatre in Honolulu where I saw a lot of dual projection 3-D films there in the early fifties. After the Movie, we were allowed to keep them and many of my friends used them as sunglasses. I did not. James Cameron's new Titanic film, "GHOST OF THE ABYSS" opens next week and thank God, Honolulu's showing will be the IMAX 3-D presentation instead of the awful single projection 3-D version.
