Hold the little rubber tire against the edge of the platter and measure the speed while adjusting (multiply reading x2)...

Detail view of the face. Note that there are two sets of numbers (white-on-black and black-on-white) -- this allows you to take measurements in either direction.

There were a few times when I wished that I had one of those, as counting the reves by eye when timing is a real pain!

How much do these cost? Are they universal for use on a variety of different manufacturer's products, or made for a particular unit? If they are universal, are there different size tires to compensate for different diameter platter decks?

It's a good idea; I use an electronic tach from Extech.

I've tried both the Christie Tach and a Digital Tach....and sttled on the Christie Tach as its alot less time consuming. Doesn't even take a full revolution of the platter to get the reading....as a bonus I've made an adaptor for it to monitor the revs of my cars engine [Wink]

...something SW was king of years back.....

I'm not sure how much difference there would be from one platter system to another -- full size ones, that is. The diameter of a platter disc is not a standardized thing?
