Nepali movies are still released in mono prints. What is a good sound system for showing mono films. Is there something else you can do to make mono sound more exciting in a theatre?

Yes, You could aquire a synthesiser to create psudo stereo playback fomr mono tracks. The sound is generally alot fuller sounding that with just a single speaker. Kintek made a very good synthesiser but theya re out of buisness. Today about the only off the shelf product intended for this purpose is made by Ultra Stereo Labs as an option on the JS series cinema processor. Alternately you could experiment with different delays and that sort of thing but the above two synthesisers are actually built around comb filters and would work well. An extra power amp and two extra speakers behind the screen are also needed.

The only good syn. was Kinteks...the others were so-so at best. Kintek used their experience from the dbx days to "look" for dialogue so that dialogue tended to stay in the center and was emphasized. They were also best at keeping the dialogue out of the surrounds while allowing music type effect to play through.

I believe you can still get the JSYN-05 syth. card from Ultra Stereo and it should work in their JS series processors.

A less drastic approach than fake stereo would be to play with the Academy roll-off. Depending of course on the processor or whether there even is a processor and wide range A and B chains. It would have to be adjusted on a case by case basis since less rolloff may make one film sound richer and fuller and another sound harsh and distorted. Lifting the Academy filter entirely is generally too drastic but passing a bit more high end might improve some tracks. If there is no adjustment then the sound could be routed through an external EQ.
