i noticed when i was tearing down x-men 2, that the first reel had no digital sound track on it. was there a reason for this, or was it just that only my film was screwed up like this???

If in digital you are referring to SDDS, not all prints have SDDS tracks, so it is possible to get some reels without SDDS tracks printed on them.

If this is the case, it has really already been beaten to death.
Dual inventory print hassles...again!
