Everytime we have a sound problem or suspect that there is a sound problem in out theatre, we have to send for a technician to come from India. This costs a lot of money and time is wasted for them to plan a trip here. Is there information out there, whereby, I can buy my own equipment (e.g RTA, Scope, Pink Noise Generator) and do it myself? I have a CP 65 with DA 20 installed in my theatre and I have a genuine interest in theatre sound system. Or is it better left to the "experts"?

If you still have the manuals for the Dolby stuff there should be a lot of the kind of information you are looking for in those. You can buy RTA's and Osciliscopes on the net and there are some that are so automated I'm sure even a novice can use them. There are also Dolby schools that you can attend for a nominal fee but I think they hit Nepal earlier this year so I don't know if they will be in your neck of the woods anytime soon.

You should price some Dolby Tone/Pink Noise test film to do the minor touch ups yourself and then chip away at the expensive stuff like a scope and RTA.

Ask the tech if you can watch what he’s doing and help the next time you call him. Most tech’s are willing to teach someone like you some of the checks if you don’t get in their way and slow them down. Beware! Sometimes a little knowledge is more dangerous than none. Some people get a little bit of training and think they can mess with more than they know. If you don’t know what it does, don’t touch it. [Smile]
