What types of material have you used for screens?

I am planning something for this winter and was wanted to use snow. Has any one tried this?

Not film projection, but I have seen those things made for stage use, that project gobos and effects via a movable mirror in front of the lens projected onto snow, seemed to work ok. I think you would need to keep the audience a fair way back from the 'screen'.

Just a thought, we could show 'A Night to Remember' projected onto an iceberg.

Snow should work well as a screen (fresh snow is pretty white, after all ), except that it's likely to scatter rather than absorb the light internally, which is likely to cause a "halation" effect (halos around light objects) and reduce sharpness and image contrast.

I wasn't sure exactly how it is going to be built. I will be experimenting with it this winter though.

John P. how would I go about reducing the halation effect?

This would be for projecting movies, not lighting effects.

Spray on a white reflective surface, like white latex paint. You don't want the light getting in and bouncing around the ice crystals.
