Over the past year, we have accumulated a number of front doors (Dolby CP-500), some with volume control problems, some with l.c.d. screen read-out problems.

Is there anything to be gained by taking the back off these doors? I am thinking that if the volume control is equipped with some sort of magnetic or photo-sensitive eye that could be cleaned with compressed air, or (in the case of screen problems) any easily replacable chips (not s.m.t.'s) that are field-replaceable, perhaps I could get these things up and running again, quicker than sending them back to Dolby.

With the LCD screens I have occasionally had luck with just disassembling and reassembly (i.e. reseat some of the connectors). It has caused some of the black lines to disappear. I've had a couple that this saved a trip to Dolby. But most of them had to take a trip to California

The volume control on the CP500 is a rotary contact encoder made by Bournes. If can fail if the knob is knocked heavily inwards by a careless person. Once it fails there is no way to fix it, it has to be replaced. The part is relatively cheap but is not readily available. Minimum order quantity from Bournes is 1,000 units, I know this because we have been using the exact same part in Panastereo processors for years before Dolby stole the idea for the 500. [Roll Eyes]

It means he could sell them for much more than they cost earning him a nice profit for his trouble and it would still be a good deal for the buyer.
