Occasionally I will see a trailer attatched to a print with 8-perf tape so that the edge of the tape is on the frame line. How awesome is this!? Anyone know if this type of tape is available and if there are any splicers that use it?

The mighty CIR splicers are available to use the 8 perf tape and it is the standard in most film labs

I've been begging Neumade to make an 8 perf version of their splicer for some time now. Do a search and you can see some past discussions. The biggest complaint I hear is the force drop out of SRD, which I don't buy for a minute because I've done the test with opaque tape and two pieces of clear tape laid side by side.

An 8 perf Neumade (or Splycemar) splicer would be wonderful!

Where can one purchase the 8-perf CIR and some 8-perf tape? CPI is the only one I know that has CIR, and they don't have any info on their site. Does CIR even have a site?

I'm confused here... are yous talking a 35mm 8-perf splicer or a 70mm 8-perf splicer? There seems to be a confusion of the terms here.

Also, I thought it was a Splycemaartini splicer??

We're talking about a 35mm 8 perf splicer.

Having the splicing tape cover 8 perfs on 35mm allows for both edges of the splicing tape to fall on frame lines.

Hi folks,

I've got a CIR 8 perf splicer for my screening room, it is exactly the same as a normal "special edition", except the 8 perf puncher and blade. Even the quality is the same [Wink]

As my Aussie colleagues would verify, 8 perf tape joins are quite common here in Oz, along with the Ilcollatrice splicers (Italian made) which can use either 8 or 4 perf tape.

8-perf (1.5 inch wide) splicing tape hides the edges of the tape on the framelines, so splices are less visible.

Many film editors make 8 perf splices with Rivas type splicers using perforated tape. I've even seen some make 2 perf splices which are invisible in 1.85 format.

I use the Rivas types splicer here. We see alot of 8 perf splices here in Post-Production. The perforated tape it uses is pretty expensive per roll. ($15 a roll)

What is the point of using perforated tape? Wouldn't it be easier just to use a splicer that punches out the holes?

The pre perferated tape is more accurate perf if it has to travel over the mag head of a dubber and less temdancy to get fuzz on the edges that moght show on a printer

I also have several of the Rivas splicers (35mm straight, 35mm diagonal for fullcoat, 16mm straight). I get the impression that the pre-perfed splicing tape (at least the stuff from Christy's Editorial Supply) is a bit thinner than the Neumade guillotine tape. The Rivas splices don't seem to make quite as much of a noise when they go through the gates.

But I'd like to try one of the Tokyo Seiki 8-perf splicers. Will add one to my Yahoo Japan search string list...
