Do Dolby SR prints always say SR on the leader? I believe SR was introduced in 1986. Is there a good way to tell if films from that period are SR or A encoded? IMDB seems to say "Dolby" for Sound Mix in their technical specs. This doesn't help.

I think it was 1987 with Robocop. You cannot tell by inspecting them visually. But if you play the print and switch back and forth between A and SR it becomes quite obvious to the ear which is the right NR type to play it.

Hey Matt,

I think if you look in the area of the edge of the leader (where SDDS now lives) its printed there.

Something like 'DOLBY A/SR' or just 'DOLBY A'

Why are you asking anyway?
Does a Dolby A sound worse when run with SR turned on?

And yes the IMDB sucks when it comes to the technical tab.

Dolby A and mono prints sound terrible when played in SR. SR plays OK in A, however. Mono prints (which can be identified visually) should be played in mono, but don't sound too horrible in Dolby A. I don't think I've ever seen an SR track on anything made prior to the early '90s. Almost all prints with SRD tracks have SR optical tracks (with exceptions for a couple of early Disney titles which had Dolby A optical tracks).

"Robocop" was indeed the first 35mm optical Dolby SR release.

"Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" was the first movie to use the process, in a very limited form with release prints. That film preceded "Robocop" by about six months (released in the holiday season of 1986). Two 70mm Dolby SR mag prints were made and booked in two theaters in Los Angeles (the ads had "Dolby Spectral Sound" under that big 70mm logo).

I've put together a pretty nice collection of vector-based computer graphics logos of all that stuff, but have never been able to find any source material good enough to recreate the original Dolby SR logo.

[joe] gave me a pretty cool Dolby SR bumper sticker though.

My rule's always been don't run it in SR unless it specifically says SR on the leaders (if you don't already know, 99% of the time the sound info will be printed on the leader in the optical soundtrack area.) Prints that just say "Stereo" or don't have any info at all get run in Dolby A. Playing anything in SR decoding that wasn't meant to sounds awful- it usually sounds low and muffled.
Same can be said for cassette tapes (does anyone use those anymore?)- I never turn the NR on unless it's labeled on the tape as having NR.

I got tricked the other day when I ran "The 5th Element" ('97). It supposed to be in SRD with SR analog and SDDS. When I ran it I was getting straight "F"s and I thought my reader was goofed up. It was fine in SR. I tried looking at the film as it ran with a flash light to reassure myself that it was in SRD and it looked like it had the appropriate fields as there was the slightly gray boxes between the perfs. I was bummed. On rewind I stopped it for a moment and looked closely and sure enough the boxes were there but they were blank. I guess some prints were digital and some weren't. Those pranksters!
Why would they double inventory like that?

That was a Sony release (Columbia/Tri-Star) if I remember correctly. They were on an SDDS exclusive kick for years. Somewhere in the archives there was an explanation about why the film would have SRD-looking marks like that, sort of like how some films today have SDDS-looking stripes down the edges, but I can't remember why. Regardless, there was a time where double inventory was required due to the labs not being able to print the digital tracks in enough quantity.

I don't think that movie was released in SRD anywhere though.

Sony had DTS on their big releases that year ( Air Force One, Starship Troopers ) I'm surprised that 5th Element didn't have DTS on it.

European prints of "The Fifth Element" were Dolby Digital.

Sony's USA release prints were SDDS. No Dolby Digital.

Usually it says "Stereo A" or "Stereo SR" if it's a Dolby NR track. I have personally never seen a "DTS Stereo" track but I believe somebody in an older thread addressed this and said to use A-Type NR for those.

DTS analog can have either A or SR encoding either done on the recording stage or optical house. A is popular out of the country depending on the state of the art of the market served.

Thanks for all the help. I wanted to know because I want to get the right encoding set before the show starts. I don't want to have to go into the theatre to try to figure out if the sound is muffled or not. Often a film might start with dialog or very low music and it takes a while to figure it out. Also, it would seem unprofessional to twiddle with the sound during the show.

Do you not screen your prints before you the first show? That would be the time to play around with the sound if you have to.

Do the Woody Allen prints say SR on the leader or do they say mono? (Yes, I know the mix is mono, but it uses SR noise reduction, right?)

Why do mono and A-type prints sound crappy when played in SR, but SR prints sound OK when played in A?

They are different types of noise reduction encoding system

No -- I am a film collector, not a professional movie house. So if friends want to see a film, I put it on. There is really no time to pre-screen the film. This is also why I run changeover rather than platters. If I ever figure out what the encoding is, I'll start marking the prints.

Max, the logo you showed is not the original Dolby SR logo. In fact, it is an improper duplication since it incorrectly uses Arial in the layout. Dolby Labs' corporate identity strictly specifies the use of Eurostile and Helvetica (with the 55, 55 Bold, 65 and 65 Bold weights from Linotype AG being the right versions).

Usually when I see Arial in the layout it came from someone trying to do graphics in MS Word or from a Windows-based machine without any access to Helvetica (Helvetica is a standard font for the Mac).

The logo at top gives you an idea how the original Dolby SR logo appeared (I scanned that one from a newspaper ad; the halftone screen in the background screws it up good).

The second logo is the Dolby SR logo that is most familiar to everyone.

The third logo is the corporate Dolby mark (with Helvetica 65 Bold used instead of Arial).

The fourth piece of art is a diagram sent to me from Dolby Labs' Roger Dressler showing the formula for properly laying out a Dolby Digital logo.

Ah, the joys of having multiple sound formats.

I recall somewhere along the line someone saying that Dolby "owned" certain film geography. Where does any company lay claim to any area on a release print? Even if they patented a certain process that would reside in a certain area, such as the in space between the sprockets that currently are not used, what would prevent anyone else from putting whatever they wanted in that space, say the lab deciding to place track format information there? I am sure that Dolby (or anyone else) can only patent the process but not the print geography where they intended to put that process.

Example: Problem with leaders is that down the line they can get detatched and lost (lots of times we get older prints with leaders that are not original to the print). It sure would be helpful if that little bit of print geography that is left (the sprocket spaces oposite the Dolby digital) were used to print vital data along the entire length of the print, such as those things that can't be know by observation -- the NR encoding type and even the reel number. Then all that head-scratching over whether it's A or SR and the controversy over whether or not to leave ID frames would all be moot.

Again, I posit that no one can claim that they "own" any specific geography on the print, even if they are the mighty double D.

My experience indicates that when SR is played on A, the dialogue seems low relative to sound effects and music. Is this a typical result?
To what extent is there a backward compatibility when A is played on SR? What is the impact on the audio?

Many times "backward compatibility" is in the ear of the beholder. When Dolby A prints were first introduced, they were double inventoried with non-dolby prints. The two were incompatible from an absolute, theoretical perspective that says what is encoded must be decoded in precisely the same manner. Every technician knows that playing a Dolby A without calibrated A-NR decoding will produce a distortion in the sound -- high end hiss and pumping. But what is true in theory becomes less true in the light of politics. When Dolby realized that the big stumbling block for CDS was the need for the distribs to double inventory, Dolby began saying that the studios DIDN'T need to double inventory, that Dobly A and Academy tracks, miraculously became compatible...."no need to double inventory; playing back Dolby A without decoding isn't THAT bad." All of a sudden, Dolby A prints worked perfectly well with standard, mono playback systems without A-NR. Twas a lot more politics than science.

Just go into any sound studio and ask the recording engineer if he would consider a Dolby A encoded tape to be compatible with playing it back without A noise reduction. After he stops laughing, ask him if he thinks the sound would be acceptible.

Same thing with A and SR. Is it "acceptable?" No more so than sticking a Wrattan 85 filter in front of the lens and over-warming the light temp to a incandescant value. Yah, you can "see" the image and maybe the audience won't walk out in droves, but it is still a distortion and not true to the original.

It not what you can get away with, but how best to be true to the film maker's intent.

Dolby claimed compatibility long before the advent of DTS. Larry Blake wrote an article about mixing for Dolby and issues of mono compatibility in an article for Recording Engineer/Producer in June, 1985.

If you played back a Dolby A film without decoding, all other things being equal, you would hear an increase in high frequencies and also an increase in hiss. However, if the levels are relatively high enough to cover the hiss, then the Dolby processing was hardly in use anyway, and you wouldn't hear that much difference, since Dolby A works primarily on low-level, high frequency material. Experience with Dolby B shows that many people actually prefer playing back a Dolby B encoded tape without the noise reduction, because of the increased levels at high frequencies. I once heard Ray Dolby make that comment. He fully realized that most neophytes really had no idea what Dolby was.

Remember that Dolby playback doesn't use the Academy Curve, it uses the X curve. Because the Academy rolloff is so steep, you actually don't hear much difference between playing a mono Academy soundtrack and a Dolby A soundtrack played back via non-Dolby playback. Although admittedly, I've never had the opportunity to A/B this.

Playing SR via A or A via SR is another story. Because it's relatively full-range, one would hear all of the artifacts associated with playing back with the wrong processor. And aside from what would be perceived as EQ anomalies, since the processing would take place at the wrong frequencies and levels, I also suspect one would hear quite a bit of pumping in the audio level. Playing SR via A is probably a lot worse than playing A via SR.

the word i've heard before is the opposite. while i'm not sure i've ever heard A via SR (wouldn't a processor that does SR probably do A as well?), we do play SR via A on 2 screens, and it doesn't seem too bad. in fact, aside from not sounding as "big" as our digital house, there is to my ill-tuned ears nothing wrong with it. except for when there is, and it's some other problem.

I was told the same thing about it being worse to play A in SR but I haven't ever been that curious about it until reading this thread. I'll give it a try and see.

I have played Dolby movies in mono before with no apparent problem -- certainly no refund demands -- but the point is well-taken that encoded signals really ought to be decoded properly.

As for automatically having A in an SR-equipped box...they aren't necessarily both going to be there...at least not at the same time. For instance, the CP50 doesn't have enough room for both SR and A NR cards and IIRC there are other processors where this is also the case. Cards have to be swapped, provided that the cinema owns a set of both types of NR cards.

I'm in the very situation you describe with a CP50 upgraded to SR. I will hold on to the A cards though to run earlier prints where appropriate.

I agree that anything encoded must be decoded correctly. I was just wondering what the audio encoded SR would sound like on A and the level of acceptibility. I would imagine slight pumping from tracking error (rather like that from incorrect dolby level).

On a similar subject, I have wondered for some years, if a few mono films of the sixties and seventies had a pre-emphasis of high frequencies. The reason, most films if played flat without academy roll off may be noisy, but the eq is ok, even with a narrow slit. It's surprising in fact, what's on some of those early recordings. They can actually sound quite good played this way if you don't mind a bit of noise. In this instance, the recording curve drops off at about 8,000 cycles.

Alternatively, some mono features play with what seems to be an abundance of highs and sound very toppy when played flat. They sound unbearable in fact. Naturally, the academy filter in the playback normally brings these highs back to the correct eq.

Now the result of this would seem that the high fidelity of these recordings is increased. The academy roll off is still active and reduces noise, but slightly higher frequencies are reproduced than in previous recordings. The filter's curve is partially defeated by the pre-emphasis.

Now I haven't seen confirmation of this documented any where. This apparent variation to some mono recordings however, makes me wonder if there wasn't an attempt in the mix, to increase the upper frequency range SLIGHTLY of these tracks some years before NR was introduced. I would be interested to read any comment.

Right. But any of Dolby's early literature will tell you that the room must be aligned to that curve, which was developed primarily by Dolby and adopted by the ISO in 1972 (ISO 2969).

Before that, from 1938, theaters were supposed to EQ their rooms to the Academy Curve, although I'm sure many weren't equalized at all. (Before 1938, there was no one standard.) The Academy Curve rolls off much quicker (down 17db at 8K).

My point was that any anomalies caused by playing back a Dolby A print on a mono non-Dolby system would probably not be heard (at least not the high frequency anomalies) because of the steeper Academy curve, although one of the reasons for the Academy roll-off was because of high frequency distortion in the old Altec A7 speakers.

Of course this whole discussion is somewhat moot because how many theaters still have mono non-Dolby optical sound? And those that still have the facility are probably also playing back Dolby (and perhaps Digital) and are EQd to the more modern standard in any case.

And just as a side point, while sound mixes for mag tracks were monitored (and supposed to be played back) without the Academy curve, no standard was ever developed (before the ISO2969 standard.)

The academmy curve was a preemphasis on recording that accounted for many items and room eq was really not one of them
the width of the playback slit (a 1.5mil slit will emulate on its own most of the rolloff) and the effects of the older speakers in themselves

The X curve is independent of any recording curve used but is a tailoring of the room andspeakers etc to a predetermined curve

no, you just need a Cat No. 113C and and ext. SR-Adapter (like the SRA 5). Or just plug the two Cat 280 (wich are in the SRA-5)direktly in the CP, but then you can not switch between Dolby A and Dolby SR.

I remember when Dolby B was all the rage in consumer audio tape equipment. It was awful! Good for classical and chamber music, perhaps, but death to R&R (my favorite music, then and now).

Everyone I knew back then always turned it off, when given the option. Better to have a little hiss than dead music. [Smile]

Hmmm...I used Dolby-B extensively on R&R and R&B music back when it was "all the rage" and never had it kill anything but the hiss.

Dolby-B like all of the other Dolby NRs depended on the system being properly calibrated. Above the Dolby Level.(normally 185nW/m on most tape players, was Dolby-Level. Anything recorded above that level received no compression or expansion, the circuit did not have any affect on the signal.

If you get ahold of any of those decks from the 70s and even from the early 80s, you will find they have the doube-D symbol on the meters or some other indication of where Dolby Level was. It was not at 50% or 0-dB unless that is where if fell on a specific deck's meters. For compatibility, the level was referenced to the actual flux on the tape. In this way, a tape recorded on any deck should play correctly on any deck.

That is the theory...in practice, most consumer decks were miserably calibrated and generated the response on the post above mine.

In fact, Dolby-B did NOT kill any music or high-frequencies...it was quite transparent to the recording process and only affected low-level signals (when properly calibrated). When someone complains about Dolby NR (any of them) the problem really lies with their equipment, not the NR. If your recorder/player can't faithfully reproduce what was recorded or it is mis-calibrated, then it won't perform.

None of my decks ever seemed to have this problem (even some of the cheaper ones).

Now R&Rers did find they liked recording with Dolby on and playing back with Dolby off...the result was some mild compression in the high frequencies and elevated treble...the fact that some prefered that doesn't make it right and it definately is not the same signal that was originally recorded. The same result could be achieved without the Dolby NR circuit but it gave you all that with just the flip of a switch in the recording process.

Now, if you played back a tape that did not have Dolby NR applied on the recording process then yes it will kill the music with over expansion and reduced Highs.

I still wish I had a more definitive way to test for A versus SR (see my Taxi Driver post in the FITA). I vaguely wonder how hard it is to tell analytically. If I grab the Lt/Rt tracks off my CP65 either after the preamp or at the post-NR testpoints on the Cat.150, and feed them into some measurement software... Or perhaps if I just measure the dynamic range of the track over the course of a reel and see if it crosses some threshold... (Alternatively, I guess I could measure of the 242's testpoints, post-matrix...)

I don't suppose anyone has experimented with this methodology? [Smile]

This is still an interesting topic-- I don't know that there is any official way to test for A vs SR, or how to tell clinically whether the equipment is actually processing properly. The dynamics of a sound mix are creative choices and they can vary a lot, so it would be difficult to measure for dynamic range. It's a moving target with program material.

However it's fairly easy to develop an ear for distinguishing A from SR, and when a system is working right. Listening for split surrounds or looking at an LR phase display on a scope would identify SR, but this isn't always obvious.

In the early days of Dolby processing in the music recording business, I carried a home made test tape of high, mid and low tones at different levels. If the system was working right it would reproduce the exact same varied levels in playback mode. Then you would adjust levels in record mode to match those output levels. The actual recorded level on the tape, however, showed much less variation due to compression in the encoding process.

But still a lot of errors cropped up. Supposedly "Light My Fire" by The Doors was encoded Dolby A (one of the first recordings to use the process), but the mastering engineer who cut the disk did not have a Dolby unit. So the record was released with the bright, compressed sound of un-decoded Dolby processing.

Occasionally I will get a "restored" print of an older, originally A-encoded title that is marked SR but is definitely still A-encoded, as though the original A sound track was just reprinted. Possibly an innocent mistake, but also an easy way for a facility to make money for a re-sounding job while not actually performing the work.

Incidentally, the chip in the decoding section of a cp55 will also function as an ENcoder. I had a cp55 that had a resistor fail and a decoding chip began to compress the right front signal instead of expanding it. Needless to say the stereo effect got really weird.
