Where besides the Cinema page on Dolby's website can I find any info on the history and technical details of the various sound formats? Dolby didn't have as much as I was hoping for on their site. Thanks.

I've been doing some research to try to answer a question I've had for a while, and I can't seem to find an answer. From Dolby's The Evolution of Film Sound, speaking of Dolby Stereo:

I know that today, you can have a mono print whose tracks are identical throughout the entire film. But what about back in the day? I don't see why there would have been the need to have two tracks prior to the invention of stereo. Yet, if there was only one track, would such a print be playable on today's readers? (Unfortunately, I've never handled an old print.)

I just handled a print of the Original Godzilla that had all it's original 1.33 screen format and had a mix of both dual mono sound tracks but on some of the old footage that was not updated for the reprint several years ago the sound track had a single mono optical sound track, so yes back before stereo they did have a single optical sound track.

The long out-of-print 1959 version of "Audio Cyclopedia" by Howard M. Tremaine (Howard W. Sams Publishing) has an excellent film sound section with photographs of a bunch of the different optical sound formats up to the year 1959.

Yes, it is compatible. It has been a while since I've seen a single-strand variable area mono print like that, but as recently as ten years ago I recall a new Italian feature, whose title I'd have to look up, with that sort of mono track. Maybe in some backwater they still use it.

There were any number of essentially compatible mono soundtrack formats prior to Dolby or other optical stereo.

One reason for the dual bilateral soundtrack prior to optical stereo was the principle that the more edges the soundtrack contains the less total distortion from printing imperfections,dirt and scratches, as the imperfections on one edge of soundtrack tend to get cancelled by the other edge(s).

Have a look at the thread 'What are the sound formats on 16mm film' in the film handlers' forum. At the bottom of page 2, and the top of page 3 are some examples of most of the main types of optical soundtracks that I posted a year or two ago. 16mm tracks are basically the same as 35mm ones, except that the film runs slower, so any of these tracks could be used on 35mm as well, and I have seen 35mm examples of almost all of them. The main ones not shown are the 'density squeeze track, and the various types of push-pull tracks, which I don't think were ever used on 16mm. They were only used to a very limited extent on 35mm, at least for release prints.

May I recommend one of the the BKSTS wallcharts, it's called 'Film Gauges and Sound Formats', or something very similar. They are available in the U.S., but are expensive, but you could probably find an example somewhere that you could have a look at.

"conventional mono optical soundtrack" is a poor term to reference something which had so many permutations.

It's easier to look at it developmentally starting from the unilateral variable area: it basically works by modulating how much light gets through, so you get that altering opaque area that looks like a wave. The subsequent bilateral & dual bilateral were improvements - basically, errors in the application of the track would be minimized in playback if that wave were printed on there several times. If you had a splotch on the wave, there would likely not be a splotch on the second copy which was its mirror or twin.

Not mentioned on that page are push-pull tracks, which apparently never went into use in exhibition.

It's interesting now to think that variable density tracks are actually sampled.

If you can find it (doubtful) Larry Blake's Film Sound Today: An Anthology of Articles from Recording Engineer/Producer (1984) is a good history of Dolby Stereo optical and 70mm (before SR and digital except for that Fantasia experiment).

Robert Alexander, The Inventor of Stereo, is a biography of the engineer Alan Blumlein, who many believe to have been the first to have sucessfully demonstrated a stereo variable area system, in July 1935. The book contains a full account of his work (no to mention all his other audio engineering experiments, notably in microphone design).

Wow, I totally learned something. I always thought that "bilateral" referred to the fact that there are two tracks. I didn't know it actually meant that there are two edges on each track, and dual bilateral means two tracks.

So let me see if I understand this. The original variable area tracks were unilateral. Then it was decided to come up with a bilateral track for redundancy? Quite interesting.

Now that some of you have confirmed that such older tracks are playable on today's readers, my question is, How? Wouldn't the solar cells have to be different, and/or wouldn't the processor have to treat the tracks differently?

On a related note, do today's readers contain one solar cell, or two (one for each track)?

since even the (non-dual) bilateral mono tracks have bilateral symmetry (duh) each half may be read in the conventional manner as one channel with no complications, and processed as mono.

the unilateral track will probably not work this way. at the very least, the center of the track, which contains information, would never get scanned. it would be interesting to hear it. it might well be somewhat intelligible, but sound awful. i have a roll of film with a unilateral track. if it's not too shrunk i might try to play it (with the lamp off!).

The stereo cells in my Prevosts really looked like 2 individual cells, there was no mistaking it. But the ones in the Centurys looked like one smooth, continuous chip. Looks aside, there have to be two separate cells for stereo.

I don't know exactly what goes on in the LED reverse-scan readers.

Years ago I saw a 16mm print that had a soundtrack with SIX lateral traces, although lateral seems a superfluous term when it comes to soundtracks (aren't they ALL lateral tracks?). It was so unique that the title stuck in my mind to this day....it was used on the Bell science series -- one was about blood, another about weather, etc. I think there may have been 4 or 5 titles in that series and all were released free through non-theatrical houses like Sterling Films and Modern Motion Pictures. I believe they were IBTech too. But the prints had tracks with this very unique mulitple configuration.

From as far back as when I first started running 35mm in the 60s, the vast majority of soundtracks were dual mono. Since I started off as a sound engineer, I was quite enamored of stereo sound and I couldn't understand why you couldn't simply use those two tracks to record left and right information instead of redundant mono tracks. A friend and I actually went to the patent office to see if anyone had patented a stereo variation of the long established dual track. I was convinced there was no reason why you couldn't get stereo out of those
two soundtrack traces.

How right I was, eh, Mr. Dolby?

J.A.Maurer optical 16mm film recorder was the source of those 6 track variable 16mm tracks. Their reasoning was to decrease distorsion ( 2 - 5% was normal for 16mm sound tracks ) and to increase fidelity. Tests where done in the U.K. in the late 1930's using left right stereo on 35mm V.A.optical. I remember viewing the prints of these of an approaching train and an anounncer on a stage walking around talking for the stereo track. Dolby introduced the noise reduction aspects but could not "patent" the track due to the prior experiments.

To answer the second part first, a stereo optical head has two cells, a normal mono head has one. A push-pull mono head has two.

A normal mono head can play any type of optical track, except a push-pull one. The cell is measuring changes in the amount of light transmitted through the track; it doesn't matter if these changes are caused by variations in the density, or the area of the track, nor what shape the clear area of a variable area track is. If you play a stereo stack with a mono head, the two tracks will both be scanned, and combined, to form a mono signal.

If you play most types of mono track with a stereo head, both cells should receive the same variations of light intensity, since each half ot the track is the same, and will therefore produce the same output. With the processor operating in mono mode, the two inputs will be combiined, and fed to the centre channel only. If you switched the processor to stereo, the decoder should see the same signal on both inputs, and therefore send it to the centre channel, but there will be some bleed-through to the left and right channels. If the sound head is mis-aligned, the signals may be out of phase, which would also result in some sound being heard in the surround channel.

Playing a unilateral track with a stereo head will result in a rarrow area down the centre of the frack not being read, and this should result in some distortion. When I was at the Loew's Jersey in Aprin they ran a cartoon which had a unilateral track. They have a stereo sound system, and it didn't sound too bad, but then a track that old isn't going to sound very good, by modern standards, anyway.

If you managed to find a print with a push-pull track, and played it on a normal mono head, you would get almost no sound, as the two halves of the track are opposites to each other they wouln cancel out, resulting in no sound.

As Leo has pointed out, it was Alan Blumlein who produced the experimental stereo tracks in the '30s; I think it was in 1935, or 36. Some of these recordings survive. Alan was working on stereo sound, not on film as such, he used film because it was able to carry two tracks, the idea of using the two walls of a groove in a disk for this purpose hadn't been thought of then. All of the films which I've seen do however carry some sort of picture. Most of the recordings simply feature technicians in white lab coats walking across the screen counting, but I have seen one of part of an amateur dramatic performance. Alan was killed, at a relativly early age, during the Second World War.

Alan's work on stereo sound recording was purely experimental, but there was an attempt to revive the same idea in the '50s, under the 'Photo Stereo' name. I'm not sure if any films were actually released at that tiime. Both of these systems were purely two channel, there was no matrix encoding to provide a centre channel.

At this time, projectors were using glass vacuum tube photocells, and there was a double version available, with the two cells inside a single glass envelope, intended for reproducng push-pull tracks. Some projectors were designed to use these, though push-pull tracks never came iinto widespread use for release prints. Any projector equipped with such a cell could have been used for stereo sound.

I can think of a number of practical problems with the idea, but did anybody ever propose a system which recorded three channels of stereo sound, using the three layers of colour print stock?

They are tracks, normally mono, which come in two parts, one being the exact opposite of the other. In a variable area track, where one half of the track is wide, the other half is narrow. With a variable density track, where one half is light, the other half is dark. If you were to play them with a normal mono head then the two halves of the track would cancel out, and you would get no sound. They had to be played with a split photo cell, like a modern stereo track, one of the signals was then inverted, and the two siignals then combined. The idea was that it reduced distortion. There were release prints made with them, but they were never generally adopted. The problem was that they would have needed modifications to the soundheads in all the theatres. I've seen an advertisment for a projector, BTH I think, from the '40s which said that it could take the double photocell for push-pull tracks. I've never seen even a single frame of release print with a push-pull track, but there are some pictures on the BKSTS wallchart. It was a bit like CDS digtal tracks, few theatres were ever equipped, few prints were ever made, and the idea was dropped. Many years ago I did see a pair of ancient projectors which were still fitted with the double photocells.

Where push-pull tracks were more widely used was in original recording, before the introduction of magnetic recording. For this purpose, since there was no need for a picture on the same film, double-wiidth tracks were sometimes used.

There were three types of push-pull tracks that I'm aware of, variable density, and two types or variable area, one was a duo-bilateral type, the other was based on the duplex track, which there is a picture of in the 16mm examples which I posted. In the push-pull version, the central black area would be a constant width, but would move from side to side, giving the complimentary tracks on either side. This was known as a 'snake track' Disney's Fantasound system used four double-width snake tracks, three for audio, and one for control tones, on a single strip of 35mm film. There is a picture of this in one of the Fantasound documents in the American Widescreen Museum www.widescreenmuseum.com

I also seem to remember that at about the same time as Dolby Stereo was introduced there was a proposal for a system using multiple, wery narrow, snake tracks, but it was never adopted.

Yes, John Mosely (sound designer of Quintaphonic Sound for TOMMY) designed a multichannel soundtrack based on the three emulsion colors, each color recording a single channel. It had many drawbacks as the track had to be illuminated quite brightly because filters had to be used to separate each of the colors, with each filter depleting the amount of light available to the cell. Increasing the exciter lamp intensity caused other problems with flare and distortion. John P. may have an SMPTE white paper reference on this system, which I believe was called KenTech, or perhaps that was Mosley's company, I am not sure. But my recollection is that the company did produce a working prototype, and may even have printed a few test reels of a stereo feature with the system but, unfortunately for them, Dolby was working on its system at pretty much the same time and trumped the KenTech color approach.

The really interesting thing about the KenTech colour approach is that it would be able to contain a DESCRETE surround channel rather than a matrixed one. The only processing that would be necessary would be to sum the left and right channels to derive a phantom center. But the surround would be a channel all its own, which means the sound mixer would have the latitude he had with magnetic sound and now again with digital, and that is, he has a much greater latitude in placing dialogue anywhere he wants across the stereo soundfield without worry of it swinging around into the surrounds. Once again he could mix directionally for dialogue placing the voice with the image as was the practice with almost all the 70mm multichannel mixes.

Here's a question: years ago I recall that around the time Dolby introduced it's optical stereo sound, there was a rash of 16mm projectors that came on the market touting stereo sound capability. Evidently they were able to play SVA tracks, if such things were produced. I spoke to Ray Swank at the time and asked if any of the studios were releasing their 16mm titles with stereo tracks. He said there was never any move in that direction. Yet, I knew a projectionist who worked at the army base theatre in Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn and he said that when the army stopped acquiring their films on 35mm and went to 16mm, they installed a Dolby CP50 and I believe he said an Elmo pedestal projector; he also insisted that the 16mm prints that were set to the base were stereo prints and they were encoded with surround. He said they had [STEREO] printed in the soundtrack just like 35mm prints and you were supposed to selected Format [04].

Now these may have been prints especially struck for the army (the armed forces network bought all their own prints), but I have never seen a bilateral stereo soundtrack on any 16mm print. Has anyone else? I would think that if such prints were struck, they would eventually wind up in the hands of collectors, but I have never come across one. I also don't understand that if stereo encoded soundtracks were viable for the army, why wouldn't the studios just use the same sound negatives for the non-theatrical market? I have a feeling this is a reel myth.

BTW, the KenTech colour stereo system would have worked as well on 16mm prints.

Colortek was the system and I heard the demostration in the early 1980's at a Los Angeles SMPTE convention. It was excellent. The conversion was installed in a standard Century soundhead. Concern about film processing issues and the push to Dolby Stereo analog tabled the system.

The analog tracks probably filled the whole space available on the film, so I guess that might have made up at least partially for the light loss described by Mr Angel. But I guess it wasn't compatible with conventional playback systems at that time, be it mono or Dolby Stereo. So that must have made it even more unlikely to be introduced widely.

The navy also had several theatres with Elmos and Prevosts with stereo cells connected to CP50's and KT800's

There were three articles that I could find on Fantasound at the Widescreen Museum. None of them had a pic of the actual soundtrack. Do you have an exact link?

If modern cinema processors contained the right format, could they play a push-pull track on today's split cells? I don't see why that would have held back the implemenation of push-pull tracks, because obviously soundheads had to be upgraded once dual bilateral tracks were introduced.

I just looked at all your pics on the 16mm thread. ( Link in case anyone else is interested.) Very interesting! Would each of these formats require a different soundhead modification? That must have gotten expensive. I never realized there were so many different types of variable area tracks. I thought they always looked like the tracks we have today. [Smile]

Comtrak circa 1981 used a set of snake tracks to carry discrete LCR alongside an Academy mono track that is about the size of a single trace of conventional dual bilateral tracks. By "snake" we mean a clear line against black which varies in position--that is, it wiggles around, but does not change in width so does not have an effect on mono playback on conventional soundheads (they would have to turn up the fader not unlike what happened with the mag/optical track where the C channel mag stripe overlayed half of the optical track).

Playback would be via a CCD scanner.

Just outside the area scanned by a normal soundhead on the picture side was a straight line which acted as a reference point for playback of the snake tracks (counteracting film weave going through the soundhead or during printing).

Beyond this beside the picture was a surround track which could be either a snake track OR something resembling a bilateral track but with differing sides for spit surrounds with modulation in the form of sum and difference. (Add the sides for Left Surround, subtract for Right Surround).

Finally, on the outboard edge of the track (and again, outside the normal pickup area) was provision for a PCM data track.

Description based on article in SMPTE Vol.90 Number 9 (September 1981), the same issue which described the Dolby CP200.

Ken, I can't find the picture I was thinking of, I'm fairly sure it was in the Widescreen museum somewhere, I remember that it had that mottled look of an old wet-toned electrostatic copier that the other Fantasound documents had. There's so much information in there, it may have been in another article, one not just about Fantasound.

I've found another picture of the sound film, it's not as good a picture, the film edges and perforations are obviously drawn in, but I think the tracks are genuine, though touched up somewhat. Anyway, it gives a reasonable idea of what the track looked like. The left-hand track is the easiest to see the detail of.

This picture was taken from the booklet which Dion Hanson produced to acompany his 'Fantastic Formats' lecture. I hope he doesn't mind me using it. (Excellent lecture, Dion. [Smile] )

Those pictures in the 16mm sound formats thread are only some of the more common formats, there have been others, though most of them are fairly minor variations of one of those shown. The various push-pull tracks, and something called a density squeeze track are the main missing ones. The density squeeze track was a variable density track where the width of the track was reduced during quiet passages, as a form of ground noise reduction.

All of the tracks shown can be played with a standard optical sound head, without requiring any adjustment.

A modern stereo soundhead could play a push-pull track, if it was one of the standard width types, in the standard position on the film; it couldn't play a double-width track, for example. Because the two signals are 180 degrees out of phase, a stereo processor should send all of the sound to the surround channel. It would have been simple to provde push-pull as a format, with the sound being sent to the centre channel. The reason it wasn't done is that few release prints were ever made with these tracks, and none had been produced for several decades when the first Dolby cinema processor was introduced. If somebody had a push-pull print which they wanted to play, it would not be difficult to make up a card with a few components on it to fit in place of the Cat. 150 decoder in one of the older processors, as has been done to play Perspecta tracks. I don't know if the CP-650 could be programmed by a user to do this, I'm sure that Dolby could write the software to do it, but I doubt that anybody has ever wanted to do this.

I don't understand what you're saying about upgrading soundheads; no upgrading was necessary to play Duo-bilateral mono tracks. An upgrade to a double photocell would be required to play push-pull tracks when they were introduced, in the late '30s, I think, and a similar upgrade was requiired to play stereo tracks, be it the experimental ones in the '30s and '50s, or the Dolby ones in the '70s. A stereo push-pull track was never used to the best of my knowledge, with the single exception of Fantasound. It would have been technically possible, but a two channel system would have needed four photocells; Fantasound needed eight. Photocells were big glass vacuum tubes in those days.

Remember that push-pull basically uses two tracks to carry one channel of sound. When Dolby introduced their stereo optical tracks they wanted to use as few tracks on the film as possiible, to avoid problems with reading very narrow tracks; hence the matrix encoding, to get four channels onto two tracks. They would not have wanted to increase the number of recorded tracks by using push-pull. They also wanted their tracks to be compatible with existing mono equipment, to avoid dual print inventory problems and costs. They always stated this as an important advantage of their system. If they had developed a stereo system using push-pull tracks, this would not have been possible.

I mentioned push-pull tracks beause I thought it was necessary to give a technically complete answer to the questions of how many photocells are needed to play a mono track, and whether all types of mono tracks can be played without modifying the soundhead. Fantasound is historically interesting, but it was used on only one film, and I think only about six theatres worldwide were equiipped to show it. Mono push-pull tracks were somewhat more wiidely used than this, but only a few prints of a few films were ever made. Even for orgiinal recording in the studos, where it was more widely used, push-pull died out about fifty years ago, when it was replaced my magnetic recording.

Assuming that you're talking about normal mono tracks, no. it doesn't matter how many lines there are in the track, the mono sound head has just a single photocell, which measures the total amount of light coming through the track. This applies just as much to the 16mm tracks I posted pictures of with six or eight lines, still only one photocell needed. The only tracks which need two cells are stereo ones, though they can be reproduced in mono with a single cell, and push-pull ones, where two cells are essential, you would get no sound with a single cell. Since most people are never likely to see a push-pull track, for all practical purposes, any track can be reproduced with a single cell, though stereo tracks will only be heard in mono. With the exception of the eight line one, none of the 16mm tracks were uncommon, and almost all were used on 35mm as well. It's only in quite recent times that the duo-bilateral type has become universal. Several of these tracks were still in use in the '70s, and I think all were in the '50s and possibly '60s, though the unilateral type was rare then. Duo-bilateral tracks existed in the '30s, there was a long period when many types of track were in use. If you were to run a '50s film, it could have almost any type of track on it, and no adjustment or modification would be needed to play it.

The narrow center control track serves several purposes: (1) it enables the CCD scanner to recognize and compensate automatically for any side weave of the soundtrack; (2) it serves as an image-spread monitor for correcting, within limits, distortions caused by image spread; (3) it can be used to trigger special sound effects or auditorium speaker groups as encoded on the control track; (4) it also can be used for automatized general theater operation. A specially designed compander completes the system.

On the subject of tracks that used emulsion colors to separate channels, I remember reading somewhere that Popeye (1980) used a system of that sort. The only reference I could find via Google was a note that this film was the first release in Vistasonic sound, but didn't describe what it was. Anybody know?

I don't quite understand how the Colortek system could be read with a conventional mono cell. OK, the tracks are apparently superimposed on each other in the color layers, so that would result in an "instant downmix", but doesn't a conventional mono system react very unevenly to the information on different color layers?

Well, I would guess it wasn't really compatible, like them newfangled cyan tracks we love to argue about, since a conventional (old style) mono reader would need a track with silver in it to even play normally, i.e. without a big loss in volume.

I have a note in some documentation I have, but I don't remember the source. But it does say that Popeye was released in Vistasonic, a system developed by Paramount, but that it was a 4-track mag system. I don't remember why that would have made it special, especially since there were plenty of 70mm 6-track releases in that era and obviously Cinemascope used 4-track mag. I remember seeing the film in that format either at the old Loews Orpheum in NYC, when it was still a twin or at the Beekman...can't quite remember which. I do remember the sound being quite good. My notes do say that it played at five theaters in that format in NY, Los Angeles and Chicago. Larry Blake also mentions it in his article, "Mixing Dolby Stereo Film Sound" in the 2/81 issue of Recording Engineer/Producer (vol 12/#1)

Around the same time was the Kintek COMTRAK system, developed by John Mosley, which featured (in addition to Academy Mono) L-C-R-Surround, a command track and a locator track, but it required a CCD reader. The command track could be used to store low frequencies encoded in frequency modulation. Not sure if that system was ever used i a commercial film.

The Vistasonics I remember was used on another picture before Popeye and there were a number of experiments around the SF bay area. It was multitrack optical complete with a I believe a 6 channel solar cell in the same space as the Dolby stereo cell. Try lining that up. It had it's own cinema processor.

All systems were bi-amped and had a lot of subwoofers (nine in the 600 seat theatre I worked with)and sounded great for a specific screening. It vanished very quickly leaving all the great amps and speakers behind for others to use.

My understanding is that Vistasonic was a 4-track optical format, and that is what distinguished it from the discrete mag formats in use at the time.

Popeye was indeed release in a strange 4 track optical system, that looked as if it had 4 seperate tracks in the regular optical soundtrack area. I remember that we were accidentally sent one of these prints, and had to get a replacement normal print do to low volume and a loud buzz when played though our Dolby cell.

I am unaware if this system was every used commercially.

The Colortek must have morphed into the Comtrak system I described earlier as the article in SMPTEJ was by Mosely and Johnson and they say it overcomes the objections to the earlier system. The authors were said to be with a company called Colortrak, Inc.

Do you know if the 'L' track, for example, was actually that, or a difference signal, (L-mono), similar to the way that component video is done? I have read articles which suggest both; maybe they tried it both ways.

Did they give any suggestion as to what the data track could be usedfor, and what the data rate was.

The BKSTS wallchart, at least the older version of it which I have, but probably the current one as well, has a frame of Comtrak, but the tracks are so narrow that it's difficult to see any detail.

I had pictured the Colortek system as using the whole width of the available space for just one channel, but then have one channel in each of the color layers which would be read separately using color filters. Apparently I was mistaken!

Some more questions, as I've been doing more reading and more thinking.

If you get a print with an Academy mono (Format 01) track, would it be necessary to play it in Format 01, or could you use 04 or 05? Since the two tracks are identical, I don't see that there would be any issues with improper surrounds being decoded. Everything should be sent to the front speakers. The only issue I could think of would be improper noise reduction. If the track was not recorded with any NR, would there be any adverse effects if you were to play it back with NR (04 or 05)?

My next question pertains to Format 03. My theater has CP55's. I read the enitre instillation manual. It says that most Dolby Stero prints were (and are) mixed with a surround channel, except for a very few of the early ones. In the troubleshooting section, it says that if you are having problems playing one of these early prints in Format 04 (if improper surronds are being decoded), to play it in 03, which will eliminate the surrounds. So what do you do if you get one of these prints and you have a CP65 or a 650?, which do not include Format 03?

(The CP500 includes Format 03 as one of the formats you can choose when assigning custom formats. Form some reason, at least according to the manual, the 650 does not. Anyone know why?)

Regarding older mono tracks in the USA; they where recorded with the "academy curve" which would effect playback quality. Mono track azimuth may not be perfect and may have undesireable [bs] on the surrounds.

03 wasn't used very much. The only film which I know for sure was released in 03-encoded prints was Lizstomania.

Vaguely related to which, I found that if you get a variable density track with less than ideal contrast (i.e. it's flat, and so there's a hell of a lot of ground noise playing it normally), playing it in 02 does an amazing job in boosting the s/n. The Dolby manuals threaten the death penalty for using 02 on anything other than a noise reduction-encoded mono VA print, but my purely subjective opinion is that in many cases, it makes density tracks sound a lot clearer.

In addition the level would be too high although obviously you could bring the fader down. Dolby prints are recorded at a slightly lower level than mono as they trade off some of the improved noise floor for more headroom (by keeping the average level lower there is more room for loud sounds like explosions etc. without clipping--the modulation on the track can only get so large). A is lower than mono. SR is lower still.

If you ever did encounter a Dolby A - No Surround print (sorry if I skip over the format numbers; it's just plain silly) just play it in Dolby A and turn off the surround amp(s). (Unless of course you get a chance to audition it and find it sounds better with that bit of ambience in the surrounds).

Dolby Mono (A-Type)

High fidelity (wide range, not Academy-curve limited) with Dolby A-Type noise reduction but not stereo. So...noise reduction on....Academy filter off...and matrix should be told to sum Lt & Rt into C.

This is the original Dolby optical sound format although I believe it was more a UK and possibly Canadian thing than US. Dolby Model 364 contained a single Cat.22 A-type NR card while Model E2 contained a single Cat.64 house EQ card. The original Cat.64's also held a separate circuit which offered an adjustable HF gain like you now have on CP preamp cards...sometimes called slit loss correction. So the signal could go through that before going to the 364 for NR then back to the E2 for house EQ. These are both 1 rack unit high boxes and many found use later on as add-ons to the CP100 system.

Woody Allen still uses the SR version of this format.

So essentially it's a track with A-type NR applied, but the mix is mono, correct? How many titles used this format? Why is Format 01 included on modern processors, but 02 isn't?

When playing current Woody Allen titles, should they be played in Format 05? It doesn't really matter what the mix is (mono, stereo), as long as the correct noise reduction format is applied, right?

According to the Larry Blake book about 10 films were released in Dolby Mono. That was from a 1981 article and obviously doesn't count subsequent titles of which Allen may be the only known user but there could be others.

Yes, play the current films in SR (or digital of course). The NR, level, and Academy filter OFF is the most important thing. If things are in reasonably good adjustment the matrix will steer sound to the C channel just fine. If there's a problem you can always kill the other amps.

I don't quite understand if we are talking about a currently released title released with SR encoding, why it would be necessary to make any mention at all as to whether the print was mixed MONO or STEREO. Wouldn't it make more sense to avoid confusion in the booth by projectionists who are going to see the word MONO in the leader and go "DUH"? Seems it would make more sense to simply let it play in the standard SR stereo format. The processor in the stereo + surround mode will care not a wit if the audio mix happens to be mono. If the A-chain is correctly aligned, it should play a stereo track with mono content without incident, with the L & R summed to the center and with hardly anything coming from the left and right and nothing in the surrounds. If the system is slightly out of alignment and stuff is bleeding into the surrounds, as you said, those amps could always be turned off if needed (or better yet, call in a service tech to realign the system). You could even turn off the L & R channels if you absolutely have to, although a mono signal coming out of all 3 screen channels has never sounded objectionable, IMHO. But in a well calibrated system, this should not even be an issue.

Is it really relevant to the projectionist to know if what is on the soundtrack is recorded in mono or stereo? Or am in missing something here? I just think you would be asking for trouble by saying it has to play in SR but in MONO and without the Academy curve (if it is mixed in MONO, it will de facto play back as mono); the Academy curve is would become a real issue in older processors. The CP50, and 55 don't have that format configuration readily available, correct?

The last one I showed (Small Time Crooks) was, and it also had Dolby digital through the centre channel only (i.e. all the others carried no signal, so you might as well turn their power amps off during the show).

Well, why bother turning of the amps at all? Surely not to save electricity. Besides, if you are playing digital, there is no chance of errant bleed into other channels. If there is no signal recording in all but the center channel, the other channels will just be silent, no worry about bleed. On the other hand, turning off amps would be quite problematic when the trailers are run.

With SR, there could be a slight bleed into the surrounds, but as I said, if your system is properly aligned, that should not be a problem -- the delay masks that.

I use format 03 for Moviefone ads in our Dolby auditoriums. My CP500's like to matrix some HF dialouge peaks into the surrounds in 04 or 05 with those spots, and it leads up to the feature material better as the surrounds are added after the spot.
