Deluxe Hollywood is the worst offender of those marks (is anyone surprised by this anymore?) I'd have to double check the print to verify which Deluxe lab it came from though.

Is it that difficult to print framelines only without nonsense at the sides of the frame? When this exists in the last 3 feet of leader on a first reel (my punch-in point) I've gotten into the habbit of slugging it with a bit of extra solid black if sound pull-up is not affected. If it is I put front and back splice tape where there is no splice so I can punch in just after that nonsense when I hear it go through.

A 4 foot length of leader with frame lines can be used as a reference to lay over reel ends that end or begin with fades from black. If they want to put frame line marks why can't they put them on the edge between sprocket holes.

Of course frame lines markes cannot be printed in an area that interferes with any of the digital soundtrack formats. So the only place left would be between the perfs on the opposite side of the Dolby Digital data. This would require every printer to be modified to expose that area too. Much simpler to correct the original printing leader being used, so it doesn't show marks in the picture area, yet produces easy to see thin white framelines.

Like Steve K. said, if it doesnt affectt eh audio, I cut off an extra frame. If it does then I just color it in with a black sharpie so it doesnt show on screen.

The Sharpie thing only works if your light levels on screen aren't all that bright. I like for my viewers to wear sunglasses when watching a movie.

It is still visible, but I think it's a lot less annoying than having white bars on the side of the screen.

a lot of older film does have a little hashmark between every 4th perf, not printed in but somehow embedded in the stock (i think). maybe it can't be done with polyester film, otherwise it would still be a good idea on the non-soundtrack side. of course they were never guaranteed to be on the frameline, but it's easy to figure out by comparison where the frameline is.

I've heard from a contact at Deluxe that they are already in the process of replacing this printing leader:
