I received this notice from Alan Masson, Governor of the Hollywood SMPTE section:

"An Historical Overview of Wide Screen Motion Pictures" is the title of the next meeting of the Hollywood Section of SMPTE, the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers.

Date: Tuesday, March 16, 2004
Time: 8:00 -10:00 pm (refreshments, snacks and informal get-together from 7:00 pm)
Place: Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Pickford Center
Linwood Dunn Theatre
1313 N Vine St, Hollywood, CA.
Parking: free at rear of Academy building.

Taking advantage of the versatile projection facilities at the Dunn Theatre, the session will be illustrated with film clips from some of the earliest pictures filmed in wide format, up through Cinemascope, Vistavision, 70 mm and Imax. Archival footage will be provided by the Academy Film Archive and studios which were involved in the widescreen revolution.
Entry is free for SMPTE members and their guests. Non-members pay $10 to attend.

Hi John, have you been to one of these? It sounds very interesting and I'd like to go (I'm not a smpte member) but will there be just the film clips or will there be some discussion as well?

John, as a member of SMPTE, I would like to suggest that when they hold meetings in an advanced facility, that they consider streaming the event (either live or after the fact) so that SMPTE members in other parts of the country can participate.

I'm sure they will have clips, presented in one of the best venues available. It's also likely they will have experts from the studios or archives introducing and explaining each format.

The streaming idea is a good one. I'll forward it to my contacts in SMPTE and some of its sections. Certainly, you can help make it happen for NYC meetings.
