Hello all,
What can be the reason if a CP500 with a CAT 701 does not get an error reading bellow 7 and therefore does not play Digital? Also what if the reader gives excellent to perfect readings on the tests but the CP shows an error rate of 7??
Any ideas

Many things.

Video voltage.
Bounce in film path to projector.
Damaged video cable.
Failing Video Aquisition Card.
Failing Cat671s.

Are just a few that spring to mind

How closely did you monitor error rates prior to this? Is this a sudden problem or have you witnessed a gradual increase in error rates?

If this is a sudden problem, I would visually inspect the data blocks on the print for possible clues as to the cause. An isolated segment could be solved by ordering a replacement reel.

However, if the entire print is affected I would investigate possible operator/equipment damage to the data area. I have seen scratches caused by dirt buildup on tension bands in the gate/trap area. Misalignment of the intermittent shoe (or dirt buildup) can also scratch the data blocks. Make sure that all rollers -- pad rollers, platter rollers, etc -- are spinning freely.

It is also possible that an electronic component may have suddenly failed.

If the problem became gradually worse over a period of time, then a recalibration of your reader is probably in order. It would be helpful to know exactly which test(s) you performed on your reader.

Have you cleaned the cards lately? Take each card in the DA20 section out one at a time and clean the connector. This has happened three times in the last year to different units.

I've managed to fix the damn thing!!
I thought it was the CAT 670 because it happened before in another place but it was not. The Digital reader needed some lateral adjustment. I also boosted slightly the voltage and refoccused the reader. Walla. Thing is working like a charm. At a premier the specific cinema had for Passion Of Christ we got an error rate of 4!! Quite good if you consider that the reader is from 1998!!. The best readers though I have dealt so far are the KINOTON! How the heck do they make them so perfect. Excellent Readings both analog and digital. a BRAVO to Kinoton.
