Hi All,

Continuing from an earlier post regarding Vic 5 noise , many of you responded with the fact the shutter gearbox is the main source of noise from the machine. I spoke with one of the experts on Vic 5's over here in Oz , he said the gearbox is grease filled and during use the grease flicks off causing premature wear and noise and eventaully the gearbox chews out.

The solution was to fill the gearbox with medium grade machine oil and if the gearbox if rebuilt , fill it with automatic transmission fliud. This is the solution to the noise and the gearboxes chewing out .

We have filled 3 of ours with machine oil , it has made a difference , the seals seem the be ok , no oil leaks.

We've been using a synthetic gear oil lately with good results.(Not sure of the SAE #) Just don't overfill and all is well. No need to go above the halfway point of the shafts.

I put APG90 outboard gearoil (same as the motiograph intermitent greese) into them with a bit of STP added
The older ones with the white hard plastic gears will fail with time and the form f lubricant will not make a difference as the hard plastic eventually just becomes brittle and fails

Synthetic is the best thing to happen for projectors in a long time.... Strong is in fact considering an every 2 year synthetic oil change in the new Apogee projector once its broken in with regular oil.
