I have a very noisy Simplex 35 projector that has a noticeable amount of "End Float" in the horizontal shaft that drives the Shutter.I have another "35" that has developed some bearing noise but has no "end float" in the horizontal shaft.Would this "end float" be the cause of the excess noise and can it be shimmed up or adjusted to reduce the end float.

Ian,
It will require disassembly of the shutter compensator by someone that is familiar with them and replacement of any worn and or defective parts, sometimes the spleen shaft wears out where it passes through a bearing. The Simplex compensator is a bit tricky to deal with if you have never done them before. Proper loading of the replacement bearings is also critical for long bearing life. Typically I see the shutter end bearing fail most often in them but since they are inexpensive bearings replacement of all of them on tear down is best. An entire set of bearings for a Simplex is under 50 bucks U.S! Also might as well replace the verticle shaft bearings while you're at it as the lower shaft bearing typically fails first on that assy. Its way undersize for its job.
If you or someone else does re-bearing the machines be sure to remove the shields on all but the shutter end bearing as this will lubricate them far better, they will run quieter, and you will see a much longer bearing life. Why the factory installs shielded bearings in an oil bath machine is beyond my logic...... [Roll Eyes]
