Exactly what the subject says. I know what it is and where it is located, but what is its purpose? This has been bugging me for quite some time, I just never thought to ask.

It's sole purpose is to scratch up and damage the film, scraping, or stipping the image off completely, hence the name.

Or maybe it's one of those "shield" thingies above the sprockets that prevents the film from wrapping entirely around a sprocket. I can't remember which.[av=k] [Smile]

Yeah, Joe's right. In the event of a film break, it keeps the film from wrapping around the sprocket, and causing mechanical damage to the mechanism.

Because they want to sell you a bunch of gears after the film wraps around the sprocket(s)umpteen times and strips all your gears out. [Wink]

A customer recently had a film wrap on a lower Simplex PR1060 sprocket and it stripped the gear. Shows you that even film strippers are not always going to prevent everything from happening. Case in point in that it was an old SDDS header that got wrapped up.

Film strippers are basically useless with polyester film anyways, as the film won't break- I have also seen polyester film wrap around sprockets in a Century (feeds and soundhead holdback) and continue to wrap until something gave (usually not the film) or the mech simply stopped cold.

Aaron, true...the polyester stuff don't break. However, some of the shitty splicing techniques used by some people will allow the splice to hinge and separate. This is where a problem could really come in and start wrapping around a sprocket.

Gosh Paul, I just now noticed your post. While that may have been true in the past, I have moved WAY beyond that sorta film.
