Background info:
The motor on my Neumade PRT Ultra rewind table makes loud buzzing and grinding noises when getting up to speed. Speed will also fluctuate for a split second leaving loose gaps in the reels being wound.
The motor itself doesn't actually start to turn until i reach the 3o'clock position on the speed control dial! Up to that point it just makes the loud buzz and grind.
I thought my motor was shot, even though the brushes are good, so i swapped it for another motor. Same thing happened.

This leads me to believe that the speed controller might be the problem; what are the chances of having 2 motors do the exact same thing.

Here are 2 pics of the thing. on the back it reads:
KB Electronics, model kbmc-13bvr, 2.5amps fl, 6.0amps lr
120 vac

Where would i get a replacement? I'd rather not have to buy from Neumade; doubt they'd have it, the table is no longer being made.
would a light dimmer from HomeDepot work?

I use the Neumade Super-X Power Rewinder. Mine has a standard light dimmer on it.....no problem. Sounds like your trouble is in the unit, not the switch.

You could get an AC controller for a fan to operate (probably) a Bodine universal type motor, from Home Depot, so long as you make sure you get one with sufficent ampere rating. A trip to W.W.Grainger would give you something better.

That's a current model fan and universal motor triac controller.

Keep in mind that it is a "reverse" controller. That is when turned clockwise, it starts out at minimum voltage/speed. Most Home Depot motor/fan controllers start out at maximum and then decrease speed as turned clockwise. Bad for rewinding film.

Maybe i do have 2 crappy motors.

I just tried a new switch, on both motors, same thing happened. They both run very loudly,make crackly sparking sounds, and smell funny when turned on.
They are: Neumade "bodine gearmotors"
NSE 34-rh no. p0976037
115volts 1.6/1.5amp
5000-6000 rpm

I've checked the brushed, and they're fine. the grease-pack on the gears is fine too.

The commutators probably need to be turned.

Look for a motor rebuilding shop
I have to get the ones here at cinesphere redone every two years and they usually have to be replaced after 4 turnings as they get to small
We payed $250.00 Ca last time I sent one out

Granger has gear motors by Dayton but on cautionary note is if you try to manually turn the drive reel it will eventually damage the plastic gear and pinion which wasn't the case with the bodine ones

250.00 for rebuilding one of those is a rip off no matter what currency you deal in. We do it for one hours labor plus parts in our own shop! And yes, both motors could be bad.
Our rebuild includes turning the commutator, new brushes and new bearings. Parts usually run around an extra 25.00.
