I just connected a "simmer unit" to an LP Associates 2kw rectifier. This is in a military theatre that's running 20 min. reels. When the lamphouse douser is closed it contacts a microswitch that drops the current from 80 amps to about 50 for standby. I was always under the impression that underpowering a bulb had an adverse effect on life. Has anyone had any experience with this? I know Imax does it too.

Depends on the lamp and the lamphouse The Xebex Ushio combination was designed for standbye mode and had no issues with it
They also used an electromagnet for stabalization so that the amount of stabalization would match the current
