THE BERNARD HAPPÉ MEMORIAL LECTURE
THE FILM LOOK: Can it really be defined ?
presented by Peter Swinsonat MPC, Wardour Street, London W1
An attempt to explain why material shot on film, regardless of its presentation medium has a unique natural look. It is a combination of factors some of which are not yet, nor may ever be available to electronic acquisition systems. Yet these factors could be further enhanced in film manufacture.

The Happé lecture sounds interesting. I went to the European Union's FIRST group seminar on digital technology and film archiving (link to website) last month, which included a presentation by John Graham of the European Digital Cinema Consortium. He argued that the reason digital projection has been perceived to have a 'non-filmic' look thusfar is because we tend to think of pixel resolution as being the only criterion which really affects picture quality (analogous to grain structure in film), and that the key to reproducing the film look digitally is to address others as well, notably contrast scale and colour depth.
I'll try and get down to London for that lecture if I can.
