Hello Everyone!
Quick Question: When you're running an interlock, How do you get the platter on the second machine to take-up? I'm only wondering because it seems that when you thread a platter, it will only pay out and take up if the brain is in and threaded. If anyone could explain this, I'd appreciate it!

Andrew, there are different platter designs out there, so your question can't be properly answered, but all can do it.
You really need to actually work in a projection room for a little while. Are there no jobs in your area, even at minimum wage you could get some experience, even if it is accompanied by "film done wrong" training?

Andrew, if you're speaking about a run of the mill Strong Platter (also sold as Potts) the takeup is running off the variac which is controlled by the tree rollers (the tension rollers that ride up and down) so takeup is just like always. Did you mean to ask about payout, which on these machines is powered off the same variac? That's simple, on the feed machine you have to hang the tree up to a level that gives power, just as you might do while threading to let the payout feed as you pull film. There are many platters that use a variation on the theme of using takeup-regulated power to feed the payout (via the control plate aka brain).
Other platters, such as the ones where the film taking up must first pass around a vertical axis roller at the end of an arm sticking out from under that deck, may have fully independent decks so any deck can do anything quite apart from what the others are doing.
Ask about a specific model and someone can give you exact details.
