SMPTE RP-40 and Schneider CLT 2000 are both visual test films right? Is there any specific advantages of one over the other.

The SMPTE 35-PA (RP-40) has about equal areas of white and black, so heat effects like focus flutter are more representative of a release print. The Schneider test film has a high overall density, so it will be more sensitive in showing any heat issues. Both are very good test films, and each has its "fans".

Kodak had a hand in producing both films. The SMPTE film was originally designed by Dr. Fred Kolb and Paul Preo of Kodak, working with SMPTE Projection Committee members like Glenn Berggren. [thumbsup]

When Schneider originally developed their film for THX to certify theatres for "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace", Kodak provided the B&W stock. [Smile]
