house 1: cp65, da20, cat700. when showing a non-srd print, we bypass the digital head. however, all our leaders are cued for digital. upon encountering this cue, there should be a reversion to sr. instead, the cp65 stays in the digital format even though there's no data. silence.

house 2: cp45, da20, bacp reader. when cued to switch to digital, either at the start of the show or, most often, after a mono snipe, it sometimes happens that the digital format is selected (lit up) on the cp, but there is no sound. hitting the format button turns the sound back on.

any thoughts?

House 1, try putting a pulse extender on your DB25 automation cable between the DA20 and CP65. Seen it happen.

House 2, not sure as it's never been a problem for me and I service no CP45s.

house 1: you could also have it cue to SR on the cue and put the cue on a long length of black leaderf with no soundtrack. when the DA20 senses SRD data, it will autoswitch by itself. if you have the cue on a piece of film with data, then the cue will override the autoswitch and it will stay in SR.

house 2: I service CP45s, but I have yet to see this happen. It could be as extreme as a bad 511 board.. but I would suggest trying the above as well and seeing if the DA20 autoswitch does what it should.

Not all DA20s have the cat611A card. Older models with the cat611 card cannot "auto digital". Likewise, everyone I know sets the cat611A card to NOT sense "auto digital". The digital player should NOT be able to take over the system without being told that it may (IMHO of course, mileage will vary).

The bad paart about the old 611 card is that it can not be upgraded to a 611A even by the factory. You are stuck buying a new card for around 500 bucks just to have auto-digital.

Thats normally what we do, in fact I rarely program in a pulse to analog any longer but it can be easily done if needed.... just a pulse to digital and let the fallback do its thing. But, we have had two customers that have insisted on having the DA-20 built in auto digital feature and a new 611A is the only route to it. According to Dolby there is not enough space on the available ROM thats on the 611 for the auto digital feature. One location was so that all the older DA-20's would match with later ones that already had the 611A's in them. These guys prefer the auto digital feature for what ever reason..... I personally dislike it but in some stupid situations as the one above its needed.

our tech doesn't like autodigital. the cp65 is set to autodigital though, for some reason. i intended to see if turning that off would help, but i couldn't find a tool to do it.

interestingly, in house 2, there's also a mono trailer at the end of the pack, in addition to the mono snipe. both cued for mono at the start, then digital when they are over. so far we haven't had the problem after the mono trailer. could it be that one cue is being read better than the other? that it "kinda" reads the one cue and "kinda" switches to srd but with no sound coming out?

is that what the pulse extender is for?
