We have had this problem for quite a while on two of our projectors (Century Automatic and Simplex X-L), but it has become much worse recently. In the Century, the shavings ball up and coat the whole inside of the projector, especially in the film gate, making the picture go in and out of focus. We clean it out after each show and sometimes it's out of focus already by the end of the next show.

The Simplex has the same issues with focus, but there doesn't seem to be as much being scraped off.

Quite often its caused by badly worn intermittent sprocket shoes, but since you still have a lens slider on your Century there it would appear that normal maintainance is something you rarely get. Sometimes its also caused by worn trap runners and worn gate pressure pads, but the intermittent shoes usually wear out way ahead of the rest of the stuff.

My reccomendation is to get in a qualified tech and have the stuff gone through. Get rud of the stupid lens slider while he's there. Good Luck!
