Greetings all,
I'm new to the site, and very thankful for this forum. We have a Strong Super Lumex Power Supply, 610000-12, about 25 years old, that has been humming now for several months. A recent visit from a service technician indicates that the noise is coming from the S1 transformer (secondary transformer), part # 6100wa. We'd like to purchase a new transformer, as we cannot afford a new rectifier, but Strong no longer has the transformer available. Can anyone suggest a source for purchasing a new S1 transformer?
Thanks for your indulgence.

Hi Tim:
Is hum the only problem? No overheating, no smells? Has your service tech tried shimming the windings and being sure everything was tightly mounted? Any flicker or lamp life issues (current ripple)?

Normally I attempt to tap in oak wedges un between the windings and the core. This will tighten the thing up and the hum should stop. This must be done very gently and only enough to stop the hum lest you go through any insulation and cause a short and a nice fireworks display. Then I coat the area and windings with more varnish to help secure it all. Let it dry overnight and then the heat from the transformer will help harden the varnish further.
This method works alot of the time but not all of the time and is quite sucesful on both Strong and Christie trannys.
