I have some questions concerning exciter lamps. I have several unused Bell & Howell BAK exciter lamps & wondering if they can be used with 5 star readers with no or little modification. They use the same tpye of base that the larger exciter lamps use.

Just because the bulb fits in the socket doesn't mean it will operate properly. The filament in the bulb must be parallel to, and align with the slit lens in order to work.

Note, too, the recommended voltage of the bulbs--it may be different from what your exciter supply is capable of producing.

Why not just buy the proper bulbs (BXM?)? They're not expensive and they last for quite a long time.

THe centre line of the filament of the BAK is to low for the range of verticle adjustment in the 5 star

Yeh what Gordon said. Also the BAK/BRS is a 4 volt, 3/4 amp bulb designed to illuminate the width of a 16mm soundtrack. It was never intended for 35mm use.
