My tech stopped by to give me a present today. A near mint cast Goldberg 2000' reel. I was just wondering what the value of this is. Not that I want to sell it or anything. This reel even has the minute gauge on it.

Real value: about $5-10
Ebay value: about $25-40 (!)

They sell new for about $80 (slightly more for 1/2" shafts).

Fill the reel up with junk trailers and sell it on eBay as a mystery reel from an old theatre - $125

Non film people buy these to display in their home video theatres.

Two little words help drive up the bids on 20-minute Goldberg house reels on eBay: Art Deco. The reels were not just staples of the changeover era but also examples of functional Art Deco, so the reasoning goes, so they must be a collector's item, I guess. [Roll Eyes]

About five years ago I won a eBay auction on a box of seven of what the seller said were shipping reels, for a reasonable price. I received one steel shipping reel...and six vintage Golbderg house reels. One reel was dented badly, but the rest were in fine shape. Had this seller known about the "Art Deco effect", I would not have lucked out this way but he would have cashed in big-time.
