I am looking for ideas on how best to do the following: I am trying to develop a method that will allow MPEG2 media files (a one-minute clip) to plug into virtually any theatrical pre-show digital technology and play on a multiplex screen at a preset time. The content will originate from a media player in the projection booth. I need some sort of automated switch or “black box” that will allow my content to play on the LCD projector right after the pre-show advertising content ends, but right before the rolling stock begins. Any thoughts, ideas, on how this might be accomplished will be most appreciated.

Except Regal or AMC. If you work for them and value your job, don't tinker with their pre show stuff.

I don't quite understand what you are trying to do. If you have any additional content you want to add to the preshow, the simplest way to do this would be to load it on the content server and include it in the playlist.
Or are you talking about physically external sources? In that case, automation would be needed to start the external playback device and switch the projector to the specific input. Most digital content servers communicate with the outside world via relay interfaces which plug into the ethernet port. When and which relays are triggered is defined by a script. You could have an event defined in the script which occurs at the end of the preshow and triggers the external source.
