Get mine reliably through the post office every week on Thursday.

However, I think some changes have gone on as I receive 5 extra now than I used to.

CAll up DTS and get your subscription set up to receive your discs, or check on your subscription status, for they love sending those things out on an automatic basis.

After we got our new DTS machine, we were getting the disks regulary, then about a year ago they stopped for no apparent reason. An email to DTS got us reinstated immediately. I think we only missed maybe 2 disks.

Digital previews are still way too loud! Even for me and I like it loud! Sometimes you're better off running the trailers in optical, especially if your processor allows for different volume settings for each format. This keeps the partrons in their seats and not running out to tell you to turn it down..... with the then resulting problem of the feature playing at too low a level becaause you forgot to turn it back up.

Yeah.We just stopped getting our disks around a month ago.But it didn't bother me much because I feel the same way Mark does about them.

..and I agree with this also-DTS trailers are just way too loud. I usually just leave the trailer discs out and make sure my optical level settings especially with the 6AD units matched the DTS level settings so there would be no difference in volume output between the two formats.

Besides, ones with 6 and 6D units, the first trailer almost is to be required to not play in DTS, for if the automation kicks the dowser open AFTER the timecode is engaged from the reader, the automation will not recognize the pulse from the player to swing the format to digital, thus will open in default optical and stay there until DTS is punched in manually.

Best way to defeat this small problem is to have a good 10foot long solid black film spliced inbetween the lead and the head of the trailer-to give time for the dowser to open BEFORE the reader picks up the timecode (or rolling stock before the trailers...).

Trailer discs - can be a pain in the butt sometimes...

It's good to see more people agreeing with me on this. I've been preaching the importance of NOT blasting out the audience for years and years.

Keep the volume at "tv level" for previews and run the features at "reference level" = the best possible sound presentation for the FEATURE (the part people paid to see) and puts an end to customer complaints on volume.

The hell with the trailer disks, how come we are getting features...like MILLIONS...with no DTS disks included in the cans. Is this ETS or a DTS problem?
Also just screened SHARK BOY AND LAVA GIRL last Thursday and again no discs in the can. Fortunately we ran that print in a Dolby digital house, but still....timecode on print, no discs.

If you don't get discs on a movie at or after the nationwide opening date, it would be the fault of the film shipping depot.

On screenings, if you have dts you're pretty much screwed because the discs are rarely printed in time for anything other than the major wide release date. On the other hand, the Dolby Digital track will always be there unless it's a REALLY EARLY screening where the sound mix is not done.

I've never seen a DTS trailer disc in the UK - do they exist over here? - they tend to just put the odd trailer on the feature discs (although we don't play trailers in DTS at all).

I'd say for roughly a quarter of the films we play, we have to chase up DTS Europe in the UK as there are no discs in the cans. In the case of MILLIONS, opened on Friday, they told me that the director didn't like the DTS sound mix, hence no discs. Which is annoying as it's in a DTS only screen this week, luckily with good SR though.

The guys at DTS are pushing the UK depots to see whats gone wrong. We have no problems at all (other than films where an Access track is not licensed) with the CSS Access discs which DTS send out directly every week.

Thanks Brad for the info.
I'm going to get our film shipper on to ETS here to find out why certain DTS features do not have the discs in the cans.
I'm going to take matters into my own hands with Technicolor to find out why the discs were also not in the cans. Not sure where to start, though.
I can understand the screening prints as these may never see a general release, so why bother.
Some of this nonsense makes "no sense" to me but still need answers from these depots.
DTS are you listening?

For Technicolor, just call 800-993-4567.

In the event that a print shows up without them, it's pretty much always possible to get them. In the event that the movie is old enough that TES and ETS don't have discs, DTS can fedex them to you.
