Most curved gates have the runners attached to some kind of
moving part to open it for lacing. I´ve never felt comfortable
with this type of gates, since all moving parts sooner or later
get worn, and then, how can I be sure they close in the exact
right position. The Vic 5 gate, for example, affects focus when
loosing or tightening the tension bands. And they´re new!

I feel the runners should be fixed in respect to the lens. The
only types I know of is the Kinotons, with the runners facing
the lens, and the DP 70 (in a way also the Bauer U2) with the
runners facing the lamphouse.

In the case of the Kinotons the emulsion side faces the runners.
I don´t know how much the emulsion varies in thickness, but I
guess build up from the film on the runners is a bigger issue
here, than in the case of the DP 70, with the film running on
the base. The issue here would rather be different thickness
for different filmstock.

So my question is; of those two gate types, wich one gives the
best overall focus, and also (hopefully) holds it.
