A company in Canada retrofits lamphouses getting huge increases in light. They say they can increase light out put by as much as 500%!! sounds crazy but who knows...

Yes, we have had Technalight retrofitting on two of our auditoriums. The 35mm Simplex projector (Christie lamphouse) for our IMAX auditorium, and the Christie in #21, one of our four other large houses, are now much brighter and evenly lit than they used to be. I think there are plans to do it to two more of the large houses.

It uses a much higher gain reflector and a smaller (wattage and physical size) lamp. It was a 2k lamp, if I remember correctly. In the IMAX auditorium, a flat image fills most of the screen and the illumination is impressive, considering. Not as bright as the IMAX 15k, but pretty good for the 35mm throw in there.

The shortened arc lamps are not propritary to the lamphouse there are various diferent versions out there but they ave typically shorter lifespans and cost more initially and sinc electrcity is still relatively cheap I doubt the smaller lamp saves money
Glass reflectors are nothing new the better large lamphouse's have used them since the beginning. There are several european and asian optical firms that make them and sell them on a OEM basis
Retrofitting a older lamphouse is also nothing new there have been conversion kits around for years from many manufacturers with differing degrees of sucess
Also I have yet to see a technolite put side by side on its own with no other changes such as newer lens and the likes

Tecnalite had a console at ShowEast tradeshow...it looked like one of my projects that remained on the drawing board a few years ago [Wink]
