I'll be emigrating to New Zealand from the UK next year, and I'll be working with my old friends, the Vic 5s, for the Hoyts chain. However, after having been away from the booth for over two years I feel I really need to sharpen up my technical skills and re-learn quite a bit. I'm currently reading the BKSTS manual to catch up, but I don't feel that's enough. Any advice? Thanks.

It's like riding a bike! You don't forget. You just may be a little shaky at first! It's only been 2 years and you say the machines are old friends! Maybe they can let you work with someone else for a few days while you get re aquainted.

Richard is right... like riding a bike, driving a stick shift car, etc. The only thing to be aware of is if these VIC 5's have the later curved gates you may need to clean them off between EACH show. They have a terribble reputation for emulsion build up. you might also want to bone up on automation and sound system operations based on what equipment thay have installed at your location.

So David. I take it your are a Cinemeccanica freak! Damn reliable projectors. V5s were the first projectors I worked with. Never gave me a serious hustle. 16 years run smoothly like babies. I even installed rewind motors on them (we were using changeover) so I did not have to unload and reload the spool on the projector. Just a flip of a button and walla! Rewind!!!! Just keep on their daily and monthly and yearly maintenance and they will almost never fail you.

David, I'll be based at Northlands in Christchurch so I won't be far from Ashburton. As for Cinemeccanica being the best brand in the world, well, I actually preferred Kinotons! Vic 5s are great as long as you have a spare gearbox lying around...I get into ChCh mid-April, what cinema are you at? Would be good to do the dropping-in thing and pick your brains!

Excellent, you'll be able to teach them how to breakdown a print back to the way they got it, for the benefit of the changeover houses that get print said after them then.
