Hi,

I hope someone can help.

I am looking for advice on how to maintain a 35mm Moviola upright editing machine. (Model UD-20-S).

I'm keen to know where they need lubrication, how to oil, and what type of oil I should use.

Are manuals available online?

They are a big pain in the ass to work on. Some have "oilers" on them and some are built with oilite bushings. All the 35m units I worked on were oilite and used the old style Simplex Standard starwheel and taper pin sprocket both of which are NLA. Perhaps John Eickoff has some of those left..... I can't remember if the cam was a simplex but a new pin might make a bad one good again. The movement was grease filled with black molybednium grease... something that particuluar Star Wheel was not designed to work in. Get yourself a good flat bed machine instead!!

This Moviola has oilers (small spring loaded ball bearing type) scattered all over it. It is a 35mm machine. I suspect that a flat bed machine would be better but the upright is very compact and doesn't take up a lot of space.

If I can find a manual I will be more confident about exposing the workings. Ebay might be the answer.

Have you ever heard of anyone fitting an optical reader to one of these units? I'm tempted :-) It could use the same amplifier etc as the magnetic pickup...
