I've searched this forum with no results. . .

In the Century MSC/SA-TU projector manual it states that you can remove the main drive (horizontal) shaft and gear without removing the intermittent/shutter/vertical etc etc. However on the JJ1STA (35/70mm century) I've heard you can also remove the main drive gear without removing anything else from the casting. Is this true?

But on the SATA model do you need to remove the inter, vertical, shutter shaft before getting the main drive gear out?

If you are referring to the fibre gear, you do not need to remove anything else. If you are replacing the set (both steel and fibre) then yes, you always need to pull out everything. The vertical shaft that holds the GR-4 or GR-182 (Standard or Direct Drive)steel gears is captivated by the shutter shaft and intermittent so they need to come out first, then you can pull the vertical shaft.

I would also add, that if you're in th eposition of having to replace the fibre main drive gear, you should replace the steel gear on the bottom of the vertical shaft at the same time, they work and wear together, and if you replace just the fibre, you'll find it will probably wear in double quickt time.

How are those hammered old Centurys going Tommie? They were well past their first flush of youth when they came your way!

ORC-era metal gears were not hardened properly. The older and newer metal gears seem to last indefinately, like old Westrex gears. Louis

One can normally do an inspection on the steel gears to see if the wear is significant. if there are any gooves in the steel gear or other wear that will "eat" the fibre gear one needs to change the gear for sure.

One thing though, look at the age of them in comparison to the tin cans you have in the other screens... Those Centurys have had minimal maintenance in their hard lives. I wonder what state the shakeys would be in if they were that age and had done that much work?
