Its a Vic 5, problem is now that after a couple of days of not moving at all on scope changes, it is now going in but not coming back out at the end of the programme. There is nothing physically blocking the plate from moving. It is probably the motor(?)
Any ideas?

I have a similar problem with a Simplex. Check that the plate itself isn't binding on anything/check the alignment.

Check the rotating shaft that connects to the lever that actually moves the apeture plate. The shaft could be loose in its fixtures,i.e the shaft rotates inside the connector rather than rotating it, all you may have to do is tighten the allen screws. Check the lever itself, the screw that holds it together may have worked loose.

A bit more info is required
If it is the straight gate type it is often a mechanical linkage that moves the plate that is mechanically coupled to the turret
The newer curved gates have a seperate motor and control part of which is mounted on the non operating side of the machine
One possiblility is that a too hot of lamp has warped the plate

Check also, especially just after an inner belt change that the righthand belt guide roller is not obstructing the linkage arm in the rear of the mech. Obviously the roller should not be scrapping or touching the belt but not that far away that it hinders the aperture change mechanism! Although reading your post it usually obstructs the aperture going both in and out?

Also check the 4 micro switches on the turret. One might be bad or out of adjustment.

The gear box in the aperture motor can get damage from rough handling + the capacitor, if damaged, will cause the motor to be erractic. The gear box and motor are generally two assemblies which mate together.
