Ok guys, here's my pickle. This projector has a visible vertical shake while running, but only when the framing is set in the center position. The closer you get to either extreme on the framing knob the steadier the picture gets. Our tech from the local legends Shaver Sound has been and torn the motor assembly out, cleaned it, checked for play in the gears, timed the shutter, and many other things that I can't even remember right now. After coming to his wits end he called his boss, Dennis Shaver, who has been described on this board as being the man who has forgot more about projectors than most will ever know. Dennis had no clue what it could be. So then he called Strong's expert on this particular projector and even he was stumped. So um, on to my real question, could anyone suggest some things he might not have thought of that I may be able to suggest he check out.

have you replaced the INT sprocket? Cuz, it's steady on the extremes, but wobbly in the middle of the FRAME rotation?

I bet that the teeth that do the intital film pulldown have started to groove on the base of the two sets of teeth, causing film slippage during the pulldown.

When you roll the FRAME knob around, the first two teeth which pulls the film down, isn't as worm...

AND...I bet that your gate tension is way too tight, thus causing this excessive wear. Gate tension should be at the lowest (the '1' position)..

Another easy to check - see if your INT sprocket is clean, for if there is any goo stuck inbetween teeth, this'll make your pict jump like on caffiene.

Does the gear "whine" change any when you rotate the FRAME knob? I would guess that a replacement intermittent is in order, if only to remove that from the possibilities. (It's abount the only thing it could be assuming that the gear clearances are OK. I expect to be in the Carolinas within 2 weeks if I can help. Louis

Well, I just got a phone call from my manager and our tech managed to stabalize the picture today. Not sure what he did, but as long as it works. Of course, lucky me, I get to head back up there tommorrow and help him change drive tires on the platters. [uhoh]

He did say the other day in a fit of frustration that he was going to start replacing assemblies and see which one fixed it, so he may have changed the intermittent. I'll have to ask him when I see him, and i'm gonna buy that man a beer, he can fix anything our old previously undermaintained projecters can throw at him.

I had this same problem some time ago on a Simplex XL. The design shoul me more or less the same. Taking out the small clamp that holds the intermittent assy in place from behind and giving it a light stroke with a file did the job !
