I have a couple AW3-R platter trees where the nutserts have broken loose and/or become warped. (Probably from overtightening the thumbscrews for the Kelmar film cleaner).

I have the replacement nutserts from Christie.

How would I go about securing these into the tree? I had hoped that they just sorta 'popped in' and would hold tight from tension, but they are free-spinning right now, preventing from safely mounting a film cleaner.

Do I need to purchase a special tool to secure these nutserts?

Yes, you can get a tool like this one from Grainger, but I prefer the manual wrench thing since if you don't get the tool squared exactly with the tree and squeeze with just the right amount of force you can easily waste the threadserts. Unfortunately I can't remember what that manual tool is called.

Probably is an "Helicoil" - drill out the hole with an one over size drillbit-size one larger than the original hole so the damaged hole can be made clean, then take a tap that matches the Helicoil pitch and size, and tap out the drilled hole and ensuring that the tap is continually oiled while tapping, then put the "Helicoil" prewound insert and thread it in the threaded insert to flush with the tower.

There are other makes for threaded inserts outside of "Helicoil" - "Keenserts" and "Microdot".

The maintenance guy here at the theater actually had a rivet gun and I was able to put the nutserts in.

They seem to be secured tightly.
