If the existing heads were used on the projectors then the narrow stripe would cause uneven head wear, which in turn could cause problems with 'normal' magnetic prints. The alternative would be to make different head assemblies for each type of print, as was done for 16mm in the '50s - '70s; an expensive option just to play the occasional mag-DTS print.
