I have a Strong AP platter. It is a 5 deck system and the bottom half will not rewind, but it will payout. This is happening with the 3 decks running off of the same variac. Any clues? Thanks

probably the micro switch on the takeup roller that does the programing for payout/takeup

I don't have a schematic in front of me but if memory serves...there is a resistor right after the variac to determine the take up speed. In non-ap platters there is a resistor in each motor. The resistor forces the shuttle/elevator/yo-yo lower so that the payout platter has extra speed available to catch up.

I would check the schematic of the AP platter, locate the resistor for the bottom decks and check the connections there.

That resistor is usually mounted to the plate on the top of the post

This kinda answers my question that I was having on the Alpha platters then - why the A-3 units have a three pin plug to the motor whereas the AP-3 has only the two pin plug - since the A3 has those 2ohm 25w resistors within the motor frame working with the mode switch on the front doing the "A/B" switching between diode and resistor....is this right on this assumption then?

Thanks to all for the help. The problem did happen to be one of the resistors in the top of the platter column. One of the wires had come loose.
