Anyone ever hear of this? New XD10 worked fine for a few months, but now a print is assembled onto a platter, discs loaded up, movie started and the dts kicks right in as normal...but as soon as the splice runs through into reel 2, it stops playing digital and reverts the processor to analog. From that point on, even resetting the XD10 won't bring back dts!!!
Has this happened to anyone here and what was the fix?

This failure is interesting because it occurred at a reel change. Does this happen every show? Same place? The cause could be something as simple as the next reel not having timecode. Does Kung Fu Hustle sound familiar? I recommend checking the print for timecode or looking at the XD10's display, see if it reports reel # and feature. Also check to make sure all of the audio reels are loaded.

what about purging the movie from the hard drive and reloading it? is it still picking up timecode?
I've only installed 3 of them so far and havent heard of any problems with them yet.

Movie was deleted from the hard drive and reloaded, with rebooting in between.
Same print played fine on this exact XD10 and projector before.
Different movies have since been tried...all fail at the reel 2 change.

I would guess timecode board. Time to give Karen a call at DTS.

..kinda funny is that I've ran into that same thing with the older 6D and 6AD units as well-reel change and "blop!" - analog switchover. Turned out it was a bad disk in itself-not the player's drives or software. The way disc manufacturing is done, it makes one wonder of the "QC" status.
Another gimby thing that gets in the woodwork is the power supplies on these things gets a little grumpy and drops a volt here and there (being switchers) and just that volt drop and that messes things up at times. Had to replace a few PS's on these things as well (course, the older ones which uses the AT power supply).
Like with all things digital-not the most "Perfected" thing yet.

Well we can rule out the discs as being defective, because it played fine in another machine and it played fine previously on this XD10.

..what about "switching out" cards between two units and see if the problem follows between the two units?
(Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with the XD-10 since I have no access to these units, thus this is just a guess on my part with this suggestion to help out...)

Brad, has this XD10 received the prescribed update on the firmware from last fall?

A similar problem happened to Mike in Forseyth, MT. I never did hear exactly what they did to correct his but it was definately a software issue. He also had to wait for the fix foor a while as far as I remember

Steve, not sure but I will send over a disc and try that.
Mark, hopefully Mike can chime in and let us know if this was a problem he had specifically.

..speaking of Mike, him and I was talking about DTS stuff through my personal email and he told me that he did have problems with his X10 unit, and it curtailed a simple unit replacement exchange of sorts with DTS.
..that's all he mentioned. Hope this helps some.
thx-Monte

OK, chiming in. The problem I had was slightly different than the one Brad's having.
The problem we had was, the XD10 was switching to the next reel's sound file too late. The sound from the outgoing reel would play out, you would hear about a half second of silence, then a loud sync BEEP! then the sound would come back as normal. What was weird was it didn't ever happen on the first play of a movie, but would get worse as the week went on. The problem turned out to be a bug in the XD10 software.
They sent me a software fix last week and it's fine now. I assume this patch will be released generally any day if it hasn't been already. But, this may not cure the problem Brad's having.

Mike you must have contacts in HIGH places to get your FIX so quick. Both my XD-10's failed,at the same time, two weeks after they were installed-NEARLY SIX MONTHS AGO!!! After much time wasting(mostly my time!!) and pointing the finger at everyone else DTS admitted it was their problem. All correspondance has been ONE WAY!! It appears to me that DTS could not give a
Both units worked fine when installed and then both units at the same time stopped switching the formats of the CSP 1200's that they are connected to.I hope someone from DTS reads this and pulls their finger out of their arse and does something about it.
This has been pissing me off for a long time and I think it is about time DTS learnt how to produce REAL SOFTWARE!!
(Just had to get it off my chest)

At a minimum XD10's should have software V1.01.16. The suggestion of updating the firmware is good, however it was reported the same print and discs did work previously in the same system. So the question remains what changed? If older software less than V1.01.16 is installed only the first two minutes of the feature will play...not all of reel one. If I understand correctly other features also stop playing at the start of reel two of multiple prints? Do any of the other reels of these features play? Something more is going on here. Verify where this is actually happening, is it really at the reel change or the first few minutes of reel one? If happening in reel one, updating will correct the problem. V1.01.17 is now available from DTS this will correct any issues regarding occasional sync pop between reels.

Thanks Mike. Will update software and run some tests personally.

Did anyone actually find out the cause of these problems? I am wondering if it is a problem with all XD10's... I just ordered one last week and talked to my supplier to find a shipping date. According to the supplier, DTS is having some issues with the XD10's and I wont be able to have mine shipped until next week... A full two weeks after I ordered it. They said that they could ship me one, but "it will probably fail."
Anyone know what is up with the XD10?

DTS has recently released new software V2.00.38 which may be affecting your delivery
Two weeks for delivery other than parts is pretty common today since 1000's of cinemas are not being built at the moment

And praytell what is in this new release? Is the release what is having issues?

Suzie called me about this a week or so ago. This update takes care of power bump and HD corruption issues among other things. It should definately be installed on units with older versions of the software.

The new software is not holding up deliveries, I believe the interruption may have been the transition over to RoHS compliant units. But on to the real news, the latest software version 2.00.38 has just been released; I’m not sure of the distribution schedule but at this time all techs who service XD10’s should be getting copies of it soon. As always DTS does not charge for software updates. If you don’t receive a copy in the near future and would like to receive one, contact DTS. Just a brief summary on the new version and some of the changes and improvements, DTS has taken the recommendations received from Film-Tech members and added these where possible along with other improvements into this latest version. More audio test files such as sweeps, ES and digital silence have been added. Corrections to the operation of Preselect and automatic modes have been completed. Changes in the operation of the blue playback LED have been made, it will be on steady when receiving correct time code and playing the matching audio, same as before, but if the format is switched out of Digital while valid Timecode and audio is still playing the LED will now blink, this is to notify the operator the Cinema Processor is no longer in the Digital format. In the option areas of CSS and Preshow many updates and additions have been done, in the CSS menu when using a color projector instead of a DTS-CSP you can now change font color to improve subtitle readability. There is also a short cut function for CSS mode operation that allows the choice of one show only, this feature will automatically turn off the subtitle projector after the show. Items in the Preshow option have also been improved and finally available is the ability to use a USB flash drive to save configurations, transfer settings and view log files, (you’ll get to use this feature when performing the update), DTS is providing the USB flash drive in the update package along with a new manual. Be aware, this is a major update that requires reloading the operating system; this process will take about 40 minutes to download. But don’t let this scare you, the instructions are very clear on how to do the procedure. If you have any questions prior to starting the update ask. It is highly recommended and encouraged that all XD10’s be updated to this new version. You will find that the boot up time is faster and the initialization problem that many of you have experienced has been corrected. With this new version it will now be possible to receive system updates on trailer or feature discs that will automatically update the XD10. But wait there’s more…(I hate those commercials) With this new software and the soon to be released DTS MediaLink software it will be possible to network the XD10’s allowing distribution of audio, and Preshow Playlist files from a central location in the Theatre.
