Was given an 4.5K OSRAM bulb to run in my digital projector, since I am done with 3D content for now. My question:

There is a small thin wire that is looped on one end of the bulb, goes over the envelope and is connected on the other side.

What does this wire do?

If it came loose, is it ok to remove and discard?

I think it's used to help ignition, some lamphouses need it, some don't. We used to cut them off in LP lamphouses, don't know about digital. Did the lamp you're replacing have one? If it's come loose it should probably be removed because it may short out against the lamphouise.

Phil's right. That's a nichrome ignition wire. If it's off and you can still light the bulb okay, no harm done.

Since Phil asked about the lamphouse, it is for a Christie CP2000.
