I seem to be getting more involved with video these days than I have been since I left the AV business, in 1990.

This isn't for public screening, at least at the moment, I just want to try a few different DVDs to see how they look on screen. The cinema does however screen DVDs from time for things like students' end of year shows.

At the moment the player is connected by a composite cable, and I want something better than that. We're talking about a good-quality player, but just a standard DVD one, not HD. I obviously want to get the best picture quality possible from the source material. There is no digital output, so the best options I have available to me are:

RGBs from scart, connected via a scart to 4xBNC cable.

RGBs from scart, connected via a scart to 4x phono adapter, then four co-ax cables.

As either of the above, but using RGB over 3 BNCs, with sync on green. I can see no advantage to this, so will not consider it further,

Y,Pr,Pb component out via 3xphono sockets fitted with BNC adapters, then 3x good quality BNC video cables.

My feeling at the moment is that I should go with the last option, for three reasons:

It avoids the use of the scart connector, which is something which I don't like, and from past experience is not very reliable.

It allows the use of proper 75 Ohm studio type video co-ax, rather than the miniature stuff used in the multi-core scart break-out cables. The same applies to the scart adapter option of course, but this would still involve using the scart connector, with the adapter, and four heavy cables, hanging from it.

Since the player has no digital output, a conversion from digital to analogue, and back again, between the recording on the DVD and the projector is unavoidable. Since the recording is in colour difference component format, albeit digital, a conversion between component and RGB formats will be necessary also. With a RGB connection this would take place in the player, but with a Y,Pr,Pb connection it would take place in the Cine IPM 2k, which is likely to be of higher quality than the player.

Any thoughts?

I've worked with composite, s-video and RGB, but never with component; it was rare on non-broadcast equipment over here until fairly recently. I am aware there are different versions of component signals, SMPTE, EBU, BETA and MII are all slightly different I believe, I've certainly seen monitors where the component input is SMPTE/BETA switchable. What type of component signal is a European DVD player likely to produce, and would there be any problems using this with the Cine IPM 2k?

Finally, one of the things that I want to try is projecting some black and white material; I don't have any suitable digital cinema content, but I do have some very good black and white DVDs. If I use a component connection, Would it be worth disconnecting the Pr and Pb feeds, any using just the Y signal when projecting these? I obviously couldn't do this if using RGB.

The option you are thinking of going with is the one we went with for our 2 Christie CP2000's. The image looks amazing!
