I've recently aquired a Luxeon 1 watt LED with a collimating lens attached. This fellow is BRIGHT and the 10 degree beam looks to have a fairly constant brightness gradient.
The Dolby reverse scan LED linear array was designed before such high power/brightness LEDs existed. The Luxeon light output sure looks more than sufficient (800+ cd on axis) although some sort of elliptical lens to shape the beam may be required The module with optics cost me $15.00... compare that to a new LED array from Dolby.
Is anyone working on a professional reverse scan system using a single LED? I know some folks here are doing home projects, but is there a product in development for general sale?

There are companies in Spain and Germany using the Luxeon set with great results....there is now also a 3 watt unit. [Cool]

FWIW... Sony used a similar LED to the 1 watt luxeon on the 3000 penthouse. They last a VERY long time.

A standard intensity LED should last indefinitely. Good quality high intensity LEDs (such as the ones we use in outdoor LED-based variable message centers) are rated for 100,000 hours of constant, full-on use. That's equivalent to leaving the LED at 100% power for about 11.5 years.
