Sorta a weird question...

Does the DTS reader work equally well on the left side of the film path as well as the "normal" right side?

Yes it does. I've set them up like that in many installations. It helps to shorten the delay time when you are stacking it with other readers because DTS isn't happy if the offset is higher than 70 (although I've had to do it on some occasions).

Does the posted picture depict two Dolby digital sound readers. If so...what is the benefit?

Top one is a Dolby unit the bottom one is a Sony SDDS unit.

(I bet that if a short person's planning on lacing all of that, there had better be a stepstool for him to reach that upper guidance roller..lol) - Monte

For a PPT (Projected Picture Trust) display at an exhibition in London some years ago Dion Hanson took an old '20s Gaumont projector with both a Vitaphone style turntable and an optical soundhead, and to this he added a RCA mag penthouse, CDS, Sony SDDS, Dolby Digital and DTS readers, and then bolted the spoolbox back on top. I think from memory the thing was getting on for eight feet high. I seem to remember that he also had to bold on some additional metalwork, hidden round the back, to support it all.
