I have a problem with a framing gear. The Century is only a few years old. The main gear on the casting keeps coming loose. I have the new parts to replace (both gears) but before I tear the machine apart, I wanted any input/advice. It looks like the shaft isn't sticking out of the casting far enough, I can barely get a "grip" on the shaft with the set screw. Any advice is appreciated, I want to leave this theater within the next day or so [Smile]

nevermind, I'll tear the machine apart tomorrow. I guess no one on this forum has worked on a Century before.

Rick,

Are you talking about the rack comming loose that attaches to the framing carrage? Or the small gear on the framing shaft that mates to that short rack? Have worked on hundreds of Centurys but not any recent ones made in the last couple of years...

O.K. before I let this machine kick my ass, It's going on 4 A.M. and I don't want to try to conquer this yet. Compared to identical machines, It looks like this framing shaft needs to come out of the front of the head about 1/16th of an inch. The framing gear just barely slides on it, and the set screws in the gear don't really get a good grip on the shaft. To pull that gear off, I need to remove the turret, which I am not looking forward to doing. The gear itself is fine, it just comes loose on the shaft. I think it was replaced by the last tech who was here.

Sounds to me like another "Wrong International" chengola of the original design, and the original design was never a problem. The old way was to put that gear on the shaft with single small taper pin.... and those never came loose... they are in fact sometimes pretty difficult to take out. I don't know why they are always attempting re-inventing the wheel the Wrong Way... They fail every time!

Its just another reason to be puttinng in P-35GP's... you can remove and perfectly replace the turrett in less than a minute! In fact you can remove and replace any part in a P-35GP in less than 10 min.

I agree with Mark, repairing them is easy, the only problem is Christie turret's rarely have a problem.
