...projecting La Vie En Rose, you see subtitle coding numbers hanging off the right edge of the image:

Cyan markings are the 0.825" scope aperture.
One of our projectors had about half of the digit showing.

I must say, I'd never seen that kind of out of frame marking for subtitles before. Anyone know the purpose and is it common?

I have seen these in the past on prints using a negative overlay to make the subtitle with sequence numbers on the edge as shown.

That was scanned on a Canon 9950 flatbed scanner that's designed to scan positive and negative film (as well as paper). I just paper tape the film to the glass and scan it. (In this case, I even scanned it emulsion-up by accident and flipped it in software, so the focus is imperfect, but not noticably so.

Cool, I need to get that scanner...

My room at UCI has an oversize plate cut on my #2 machine for scope....I goofed when cutting it because the picture was vignetting on the right of the huge projection window.

At over $90 per plate I'm not gonna cut another one...that's what the foil duct seal tape is for. [Smile]

We was running this movie last year here in iceland... We was running textless print and the icelandic subtitle was from Dolby Screentalk.. So this was not problem here [Smile]
