I am curious to know what part on the D536 playback board causes my DTS-6D player to make that awful motorboat sound.
Might it be caused by some digital/analog converter?
Does anyone know what is the cause?
Can it be helped by changing one or more IC's on this board?

When I had my D536 board go out, I actually swapped it into another 6D unit to eliminate things like motherboard noise and power supply issues.

When I was testing, this motor boat noise would be output on the channels the instant the power was turned on - the unit didn't even need to boot up or go into playback mode.

I'll agree with Gordon as a troubleshooting step - in fact, at one point in my diagnostics, I did do a power supply swap. In my case, however, it turned out to be a bad board.

I'm in the US so the advance replacement program that DTS has on this part was smooth and error free. I'm not sure what issues being in The Netherlands will have on the RMA process.

That seems strange cos normally the processor is switched into DTS function only when the DTS is booted, the discs are loaded and the unit is receiving the timecode from the reader.
For repairs I'll have to send the board to England.
I am very curious though what part on the D536 is causing this failure and if it is possible ( maybe just by replacing that part) to repair it myself but that would be near impossible if the part that causes it would be a special programmed IC.

I doubt if the powersupply is the cause of this phenomena since Blaine had the same complaint as I have now and that was cured with another D536 board.
By the way a friend of mine had a (new) spare 536 board but it had another revision (H) Then I (D) the boards looked so different that we were reluctant ( or rather we didn't dare) to swap them.

The rev H boards and rev D boards are interchangable. The only drawback is you cannot use a rev H for 70mm playback. If you don't have 70mm capacity anyway, the Rev H will work fine.

The one I had that went bad was a rev D. DTS sent me a rev H as a replacement.

What's the difference? I thought the only differences for DTS 70mm were in the timecode reader, and everything was electrically the same?

My bad. I was referencing the 6.0 discrete mode for the DTS-6DSV processor. The Rev D D536 boards have an empty socket for the APTX100ED IC necessary to convert from 5.l mode to 6.0 mode.
