I am working on restoring an E7 head and the
shutter shaft is somewhat stiff & difficult to turn
(feels like a spring tension restricting the turning).
I've come accross this before with these heads and had the luxory of tossing the ones that were bad, but alas I have just this one. I've taken these heads apart and put them back together but I've never opened this shaft assembly, as the spring tension in there is rather strong. I'm sure some of you have opened this before and I just wanted a heads up as to what is usually the cause of problems in there. I have the parts diagrams so I would know what to order. Thank you in advance.

Have you gone through the three bearings, esp the big front shutter bearing..?

That one seems ok. It's definately in the enclosed assembly.

Bill; no one makes any E7 parts anymore. Bearings, however, are available anywhere. Louis

Alas,I had a whole chest of E-7 parts that I donated to a historic, non-profit theater I project for that still uses the E-7s. As Louis said, the E-7 parts are no longer available so although I would be reluctant to part with any of them (no pun intended), if you get in a pinch and need one or two parts, let me know and I'll see what I can do...

I think I still have the main bevel gear and one of the bronze shutter drive gears in my parts stock...

We have a few E7 parts, but not a huge inventory by any means.
Curious, I looked at the shutter compensator/fire shutter governor drawing in the parts book. I can't even guess how it works from that, but it sure has a pile of parts! I don't have one to look at - it would likely make sense pretty quickly. I do service a pair of them here in Toronto (just fill the oil tank and change the soundhead oil every year or so, really) and if one of them breaks it's headed for the scrapheap.

THanks all. I opened it up and the culprit was rust and it's partner in grime... grime. A good cleaning, light sanding and all appears to be fine now.
